Brother is starting to work with wood on his own and we need some advice.

He wants to make some designs in the wood so we were planning on getting a dremel. He'll be starting with border designs.

What set of tools do we need along with a dremel?

Dremels are really not all that powerful. What kind of designs? You would be better off getting him a router.

ditto

You didn't say what you're actually doing, but I have a feeling that using a Dremel for it will be a little like cleaning the kitchen floor with a toothbrush.

Depends on how fine work he wants to do. For really fine detail, the Dremel flexshaft would work.. But that would be very time consuming. Other than that, I can't offer much help here.
For a large work volume, I also think that something more substantial than a Dremel will be needed.

A dremel is a useful tool, however it may not be the right tool for the job.

Depending on what you are doing, a plunge router might be better, and better that that for some purposes is to buy some carving chisels. Routers suck for detailed work.

What kinds of things are you planning to make?

The Dremel has to be one of the most useless, compromise tools out there! I've had my wonder Dremel for a couple years now, and have used it only a very few times. It's almost never the right tool for the job.

In your case, it sounds like you want wood CARVING tools, which are usually not powered at all, but could be.

I used mine quite a bit, they work GREAT for porting and polishing heads, intakes and exhaust ports.. :)

Thanks to everyone who made useful posts :)

He wanted to start with carving the outer edge like a wave all around. He also wants to do designs in the wood like drawing a picture or something.

So would he need a router for the carving and maybe a dremel for the drawings/pictures?

A question

Will the wood be rectangular or square slabs, or will they be shaped? If so you need a way to cut it to rough shape. Carving a circle out of a square (for example) is something no one does, at least more than once.

Can you link to example of the kinds of projects being considered? That would be immensely helpful
