Wood Molding

I'm looking for a good place (preferably in Michigan) to get oak trim for my home. Lowes, Home Depot or the local lumber yard aren't the quality I'm looking for.

Any good places out there?

You're going to need to go to a private wood dealer. Truthfully though, wood is wood, and you're going to pay through the nose for oak with intricate designs. The big chain stores sell popular styles for discount prices, and the quality isn't all that bad.

I bought oak stair treads and risers from this place. They also sell hardwood moldings. The quality of what I bought was excellent and shipping was more than reasonable. I know it was less for materials and shipping than just the materials were at Lowe's. Don't know what shipping would be for moldings. The people there are very nice to deal with. Hope this helps.

The quality of the wood at discount stores is nowhere near the quality at a woodworking shop and the equipment I would need to create professional quality trim would far outweigh the savings.

I'll check them out.

Thanks.

Truthfully I'm in the same boat. I really don't care for the moulding and doors that are affordable. I have about 20 interior doors I need and 2000lf of various mouldings. I'm grabbing a 2hp shaper plus a few cutters and going to make it all myself. I figure the tool investment will be about $1000. Divided over 20 doors, that's $50 per door. I can grab hardwood around here for $2/BF pine and poplar - $3-$4 for the other hardwood varieties. I figure about $75 each for materials. Throw in $25 for other nonsense and I'm at $150/ door. Same price as a 6 panel solid pine at Home Depot, but with the effort, I've got $250+ hardwood doors. I could grab moulding cutters and do the mouldings for the cost of the cutters.
