Lite-On, a brand that is generally well-known and respected at AnandTech has created a DVD player with VCD/SVCD/DVD-+R and DivX (MPEG4) support!

There are a few players (KISS players are the most well know, but are ugly as @#$%) but they are very expensive at the moment and are from virtually unknown companies.

Click the link below for a review - it looks very promising!

I have no idea on the price of this unit but the article notes that it should be available around Christmas time.

EDIT: Found manufacturer's link.

I've seen other standalone DVD players that play DivX but Lite-On is a good company :)

It all depends on the price then, I guess...I wouldn't have to build another HTPC if I buy a high-end DVD player in addition to this...

Can't wait. :)

Also interesting are the new DVD players coming out with network ports that can feed audio and video from your PC like the TB Audiotron did for MP3s.

Buy.com has one Oritron for $250 link attempt and an Ars news item said at least one other brand is coming soon.

"Media Applications - DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, Kodak Picture CD, JPEG
Network Applications - MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX Files, MP3, WMA, JPEG"

This could make more sense than a HTPC for most people.

Hmm, good point. No idea here, and like the review said, the manual was entirely pictures and Chinese, so we won't know for sure until more is known about the player.

Yes, it can. All the formats are listed on page 2 of the review. :D

I already have a device that supports Divx - Xvid - MP3 etc..
It's called an X-box with a modchip :D

If you need new codecs, just upgrade the Xbmp and you're set.
Together with my wireless ethernet bridge and Relax I can stream audio and video from my server.
It absolutely rocks

If you can have a modded X-box in Europe for less then 300$ I'm sure you guys can get it even cheaper

As soon as I find some information that indicates that this player is region-hackable, I'm buying one.
