COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Two Deputy Registrar employees were among eight people accused on Tuesday of taking part in a multi-state conspiracy to sell Ohio identification cards to illegal immigrants.
Federal prosecutors said a sting operation targeted two women who worked in the registrar's office, located on the city's east side, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.
The Deputy Registrar's Office is contracted by the State of Ohio to issue driver's licenses.
During a news conference in Virginia on Tuesday, federal prosecutors said that office manager Nekeia Mack-Fuller and employee Michelle Eckerman were involved in the conspiracy, Kocot reported.
Six others from Virginia and Puerto Rico were also charged in the case.
Prosecutors said that during a sting operation in Columbus, Eckerman was observed telling an illegal alien to sign his new, fake name instead of his real name.
"They pointed to the Puerto Rican birth certificate and matching social security card, directing the illegal to sign the name from the Puerto Rican documents and the Ohio paperwork, rather than sign in his true name," said U.S. attorney John Brownlee.
Investigators said they did not know how many fake Ohio IDs were sold, but 10TV News learned that the crimes spanned a period of four years from 2004 to February 2008, Kocot reported.
Both Eckerman, 27, of Canal Winchester, and Mack-Fuller, 29, of Reynoldsburg, face charges of conspiracy to commit identity fraud, Kocot reported.
While the women were not state employees, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles told 10TV News that they were closely monitored and subjected to background checks.
"It didn't work. They did get caught," said Lindsay Komlanc with the Ohio Department of Public Safety. "We will increase our vigilance as much as possible as we learn of each new thing."
Investigators said they became aware of the scheme last summer when four Guatemalan nationals were arrested and found carrying authentic Ohio licenses.
During questioning, the Guatemalans told authorities that they paid for the IDs, Kocot reported.
