So how do I even go about this? I'll have some time during winter break to fiddle with things. Anybody know a good place for a n00b like me to even begin to get this thing running?

For those of you who have a MAME box, what're the minimal requirements on the box you have? (video card, cpu, ram)

Eh, I'd build a cabinet rather than bastardizing an existing cabinet. Unless the Ninja Gaiden doesn't work.

Hmm, free vs. $500-$1000 to build a cabinet?
Umm I'll stick with free.

It only costs about $100 to build a cabinet. All the other expenses are ones you'll incur whether you convert or build. The site I read a lot when I built my mame cabinet was http://www.arcadecontrols.com

To play most mame games you don't need a very powerful computer, an old pentium 3 will probably play 90% of the games. I believe I have a celeron 1.8ghz machine (it was $199 on black friday a few years ago). If you plan on using the existing monitor, you'll probably need an arcadeVGA video card (http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... What do you need, like 3 sheets of MDF? If the Ninja Gaiden is working, you could sell it for more than the materials would cost.

Don't ruin a perfectly good cabinet! Sell the cabinet on craigslist or something to someone who won't bastardize it and use the $$ to build a mame cabinet. :|

Well i don't care. I'm gonna be a bastard and I'm bastardizing a ms pacman machine. nothing works on it and the only thing salvageable is the cabinet.

No, see...building a mame box out of an otherwise gutted cabinet (board and monitor are dead) is okay. It's killing a working machine that's a travesty.

I wouldn't recommend ruining a ninja arcade machine. I will come find you in the night and perform seppukku on you using a frisbee.

Oh no I would never ruin a prefectly running machine. That's sacrilegious!
I'm giving an otherwise dead machine new life.

Man, now I'm thinking that it'll be easier just to buy a bigger HD for my XBox and cart that thing around instead of having a cabinet.
