Woo hoo! GMail can now get mail from other e-mail accounts

Check the New Features link in GMail:

Get mail from other accounts
Now Gmail can check for the mail you receive at your other email accounts. You can retrieve your mail (new and old) from up to five other email accounts and have them all in Gmail. Then you can even create a customized 'From:' address, which lets you send messages from Gmail, but have them look like they were sent from another one of your email accounts. Please note that you can only retrieve mail from accounts that have POP3 access enabled. Learn more

This feature is currently only enabled for a limited number of users. We're working on making it more available soon. Look for it in the 'Accounts' tab in Settings.

i gotta try this, i have been in the process of moving to gmail to avoid the megaspam i get on my domains

Yeah, it does filter spam

I thought you had to pay to get POP3 from hotmail. Works perfectly from my earthlink address.

Yeah, it does filter spam

If I remember right hotmail doesn't support pop3.

Nor Yahoo.

Does it color them or something so you can tell which came from which account?

Is there any benefit to having Gmail to get the email rather than having the other email redirect/forward to gmail (so it still appears as though ti came from the original person)? Would seem they'd accomplish the same thing...

You can have the e-mail from alternate accounts tagged with labels.

gmail could do this like 6 months ago, but yeah, it is a nice feature.

Yahoo does support POP3, but they require a yearly tithe of $19.99 to access their premium services. Funny, Google does it all for free..... (ignoring the Big Brother monitoring of your e-mails)

It would be nicer if the "from:" your alternate email address worked better (like fastmail.fm). As it stands, there have been some instances where a service would ask for you to respond from your email address.. and when sent through gmail using the alternate "from" line, it won't pick it up.

I've been doing this for over a year probably with my SBC email account.

Once GMail supports IMAP, I'm all over that. Until then, I'll stick with my AIM Mail.
