Today I turned on my computer, got to the windows XP login screen, typed in PW, it froze for a few seconds "loading personal settings" then moved to a blank desktop and stopped doing anything. Only way I was able to open my browser is through the run option in the ctrl alt dlt window. Running Windows xp professional, HP 1ghz, 384 ram, geforce 4 mx. Anyone able to shed some light on the situation?

Do you have a virus scanner? If not try AVG it is free and seems pretty decent. If it isn't a virus I would try updating the drivers to the video card, chipset, etc. There is also a memory tester called memtest86 that you can download and run from a floppy.

Good luck

I've tried everything, and nothing seems to work. Lately ive been having some power source problems(needs to be replaced) and I have been rebooting a lot, could this be the source of the problem?

Absolutely could be a problem! In fact, a PSU goin' south could damage components on its way with spikes and such.

Replace it ASAP and then start checking into other issues...
