Won't start up - Suggestions needed

A SystemMax Gamer computer (Office Depot build-to-order) will not start up after one year of use. Computer's case fans come on very briefly when I flip on the off switch on backside of the case. Nothing happens at all when I press the start buttton on the front.
Computer shop said motherboard is B/O...wanted $300-400 to replace. Does this make sense? Hoping someone can offer suggestions on how to verify this diagnosis.
 
If you don't get any beeping you could have problems like burnt out mobo and if it costs $300-$400 to replace, I usually recommend a new commputer.

There are new eMachines for less than $360.00.
