Hello, its me again. Couple weeks ago, I posted about burning my processor up. I finally figured out that I had damaged the chip while trying to yank it out of the socket. Oh, well... think I can get $20 or something for a broken P-3 866 on E Bay?
Anyway, the NEW P-3 866 I ordered came in on Monday, and I put it in, slapped on that all too familiar Golden Orb I'm stuck with and proceeded to turn the comp on. IT BOOTED UP!!!! YES!!! CRAP!!! the OS wont load... I'm gonna have to reload Windows 2000. I dont have the cd... its at a friend's house.... what to do.... you know it.. go into the BIOS and mess around. Well, I first noticed that at factory default... my core voltage was 1.7v.... the previous processor was 1.65v... hmmmmm well, as could be expected i began to slowly bump up the FSB.... i got it to get to 936Mhz... and the temperature was idling at around 32-33C. I read around and this is good... so I thought I'd bump it up some more.... now i have the FSB at 150 and the processor is at 975Mhz... idle temp for 20 mins or so was around 34C this is good. So i decided 1001Mhz would be just fine and i would not go any higher. IT WORKS!!!! HELLL YA!!!!
well... i got nothing else to do so i unplug the power and leave it to cool off. Hmmmm I go to turn the sucker on.... "your monitor is working, check connection to computer" WHAT? no beep on boot up.... the damn thing is dead! RESET CMOS. Hey it works again... but i got to redo everything.... maybe the speed was too high... i'll stick with 975Mhz. Unplug power and leave... it wont boot again.... now for the questions.
If i overclock... do i have to keep the power plugged in, so that the computer will boot up.... when i unpluged power, then plugged it back in(OS wont run so thats how i have to turn comp off) it works.... Q2 is thermal paste necessary? i have that GOrb but no paste and the temps are around 35C max when idling... no OS so i cant really make the damn thing work hard. So how much in temp jump should i expect?
Um.... yea thnx in advance
