I re-installed windows xp about 10x now. It just died on me one day. It works up in an ugly version of safe mode saying that there is some sort of hardware error. My big question here is this:
Why won't it just load right? Is it because my harddrive is slightly corrupt and it decided to completely bug out? Everything else seems fine, it is just after I install that it seems to have problems. What could it be. the network card seems to be working fine, I'm on the computer now. But it's just really really ugly and it won't load xp normally. PLEASE HELP! This sucks!

It was running fine before, why would I want to replace it. I am not in the need for a gaming box or anything. I just need something to run, but this is horrid. Anything but quirky comments would help *snicker*

More information would help a lot. System specs, any recent changes? Being a bit more specific about the error it had would help. How did you go about re-installing windows. Did you try doing a repair install, did you re-format before trying to install, did you delete and re-create the partition? Just saying thats it's really ugly and won't load xp normaly makes it a little difficult to help.

1.4 P4
Asus P4t mother board

I ahve not made ANY hardware changes on it for the last say.... 2 years. It just froze. It said taht some hardward isn't working right. I completely reformatted it and re partitioned it. I just restarted and it starteed to work fine, and then it froze, and then it went ugly again to the lowest possible vga settings. I have no other way to explain it but that. If you can ask qeustions i will try to answer. thanks for your help.

this ram is samsung ram that has lasted me a while. If it was bad ram, it wouldn't turn on , or the computer wouldn't even function right?

That might be, like i said im not sure. but i think if the memory is corrupt versus just plain junk then your comp comes on but you continualy get errors and the whatnot.... just remembering something that happened to an old comp of mine so I may very well be off base on this.

I agree, it could definatly bad memory. Memtest86 will let you know. Also may want to make sure there isn't a lot of dust in your heatsink and fan, as heating issues could also cause the problem. It could also be a dying power supply.

Check for memory.. and see if your slightly corrupt HDD started dying further....

You could try this software called HDD Regenerator to keep your HDD alive ....
Google it..

Thanks!!!

I'm going to run the memtest as I leave the house. The computer seems to be working fine right now. I'll redo the dusting later. I did that earlier thinking that was the initial problem. There was dust caked onto this box for days!! I will let you know if I have any further problems. I'm going to have to find a floppy for this bootdisk for the hdd regenerator. Thanks again!

It's entirely possible it was overheating due to the levels of dust. Remember kids, dust kills. Or something.
