Hey everyone,

So a perfectly working computer the last 3 years just crapped out last night when I went to turn it on. Here is what happened

I turned the computer on, it beeped like it normally does but no video came, then a clicking noise came once every 30 seconds. This clicking noise was not the hard drive, but from the internal speaker in the case

The computer does not restart itself, it just begins to boot but never quite gets there. It stays on, and the hard drive will spin and the dvd drive powers on. The internal speaker makes a noise. I have no video, the monitor stays in power save mode. The worst part is the no video- I can't see if it is POSTing or not. I think it does because of the initial mobo beep.

I reseated the GPU, CPU/heatsink, and ram. I tried one stick at a time, in different slots. I tried booting without the hard drive. I unplugged un necessary items drawing power and still nothing. I tried a different monitor and GPU card, same thing- no video. I also cleared CMOS, maybe the battery just died? It is old now.

I am suspecting the power supply is at fault. But would it crap out that quick? Maybe motherboard?

The computer was a rig for the house; light gaming, work, etc.

Specs:

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
AMD x2 5000 w/ stock hsf
Gigabyte m570sli
2 gigs patriot ddr2 800
Western Digital Caviar Blue HD
evga 8800gt
NZXT PP500 watt

I appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

sounds like the 4/8 pin power connector for the cpu is the issue. try to reseat it or try a different powersupply

My first suspect would have been the 8800gt but you said you changed that.

As suggested I'd look at the PSU but with everything getting power you should still get some type of post to the monitor. Do you have any bulging or leaking caps on the motherboard. Your suspicion of motherboard may prove to be true.

Just had a similar problem, no post (but also no beeps) and solved it..

It ended up being a dead power supply. But my DVD drive, keyboard, and mouse were not lighting up until I replaced it.. so perhaps it could be your motherboard if these are powering up for you?

Seems like you've already tried all the right things.. short of trying another PSU..

the dvd drives do power on and i can eject them.

i tried reseating the power plugs to the CPU, and I also checked the mobo caps. They look fine

I will try the power supply in my current rig. If its not the PSU, I'm lost. Not really worth getting a mobo to try it

So i tested a different power supply, same problem

I checked the mobo studs and screws. Everything looks good. No ground issue

Now im thinking the cpu is fried or the mobo is fried

I have another computer laying around, similar specs but is lacking a videocard and only has a 450 watt power supply with no 6 pin connector for the 8800gt.

I really don't want to put parts together to make 1 computer, when i had 2 perfectly running pc's 3 days ago.

This is frustrating, thanks everyone for helping

So I was surprised to learn that the old 6800gt I used to test was broken I popped in another card and the pc is bac in business . So that means the 8800gt is dead. I opened it looks fine cleaned and reapplied paste, still nothing. It's an evga model. I guess I'll head over to the graphics card section to ask for a good replacement
