Wondering what OS I can use?

Hey guys! I am giving my old computer, which has a p4 and 1 gig of ram, to my aunt. She will be using it only for internet browsing and to check email. I don't have the original restore cd's, so I was curious, what free OS's are there that'd work fine for what she needs? Thanks in advance! 🙂

If your PC is a Dell or HP (or maybe others), there may be a "Recovery Parition" on the hard drive that will restore the PC automatically. You may also find that you can get recovery disks from your PC maker for free or $10 or $20.

Otherwise, there are tons of Linux versions out there. You download them, burn the ISO to a CD, and boot to the CD.

Ahh I installed xp pro which was separate from the original xp home, so no partition. Is there a specific OS that would be good? I see 3 options so far lol

Not really any specific one that would be good. Almost all flavors of Linux are fairly "windows-esque" and can be navigated with relative ease. Suse is good, Ubuntu is very stable, Mandrake, Fedora, and many others, all have KDE or Gnome in them, have decent hardware compatibility, and work quite well.
