Wondering how those upcoming dual core Cortex A9 chips stack up?

Conclusions

It is really hard to draw conclusions from a handful of benchmarks run on pre-production software, but we can still get an idea of how these future devices might stack up.

* Samsung Exynos 4210 (Samsung Galaxy S II) – Even though we don’t have productivity benchmarks for the Exynos CPU, we expect it will be similar to Tegra 2 since both feature two of ARM’s 1 GHz Cortex-A9 cores. The scores of the ARM Mali 400 GPU were mixed, so we need to put it through some more testing when it comes out. The Galaxy S II was unveiled last month at MWC, but no US versions have been announced. Hopefully we will get some more info at this month’s CTIA and products should be in stores by late Q2 or early Q3.
* Texas Instruments OMAP4430 (LG Optimus 3D) – The OMAP4 produced good results in a select few GPU benchmarks. This chip also has dual-core 1 GHz CPU using the Cortex-A9 cores, so it should offer similar productivity performance as the Tegra 2 and Exynos. The LG Optimus 3D is the only OMAP4 phone that has been announced, but Motorola’s Droid 3 is also rumored to include a chip from Texas Instruments. Look for these devices to debut in Q3.
* Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8x60 (HTC Shooter) – Qualcomm’s Scorpion core is beginning to show its age. It underwent a die shrink from 65nm to 45nm and received a faster GPU, but this is the same CPU architecture that has been used since the first-generation Snapdragon. The original Scorpion core offered productivity performance similar to a Cortex-A8, but it is an entirely custom architecture designed by Qualcomm. The GPU benchmarks for the dual-core Snapdragon provided mixed results, so we need to put it through some more testing. Look for the HTC Shooter to debut on Sprint in late Q2 or early Q3.

My contract has upgrade eligibility in the first week of July. When to bite bullet?

It's not a complete list, but it has the Exynos and new OMAP in a few of the most common benchmarks. They're all fairly similar, so baring any of them having awful battery life, I'd look at other device features when choosing.

They ignored the fact that Tegra 2 does not have NEON support while OMAP 4 does and Exynos is still an unknown.

It's also worth mentioning that the current Exynos gpu benchmarks may be impacted by poor quality drivers that would hopefully be resolved by the devices actual release. Samsung claimed that Exynos would have 5x the GPU performance of Hummingbird so that would support it being capable of much better performance than we have seen so far.

I must say that I'm annoyed that the Evo 3D is going to be the HTC Pyramid. The Ti OMAP 4430 looks like it will be a much better platform than the MSM8x60. The Exynos from Samsung looks pretty promising too though.

I must say that I'm annoyed that the Evo 3D is going to be the HTC Pyramid. The Ti OMAP 4430 looks like it will be a much better platform than the MSM8x60. The Exynos from Samsung looks pretty promising too though.

I'm interested to see how the final product turns out. Cortex A9 was supposed to be 20% faster clock-for-clock than A8. Therefore, a 1.2 GHz Scorpion core should perform as good or slightly better than a 1 GHz A9.

I'd say non-Motorola devices, but the Thunderbolt has a locked/signed bootloader too. Not encrypted like the Motos, but its a disturbing and undesirable trend.

You answered the easiest question and ignored the hardest ones. :\

I want a Verizon dual core phone with LTE and an unlocked(or unencrypted boot loader) that ISN'T a Motorola or Samsung brand.
Tegra 2 preferably, but I would mind the Texas Instrument chip either.

Is that too much to ask from the Manufacturers?

AndroidandMe's list is about the SoC's, not specific products, but the iPad 2 uses the OMAP4.

Eh... I don't think that's any closer to the truth, nor can it be any farther. The iPad 2 uses the A5, which is largely similar to OMAP4 (dual Cortex A9, dual-channel LPDDR2, NEON) except for the GPU.

OMAP4 uses a single PowerVR SGX 540. A5 supposedly has a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2.

No one bothered to do any extensive chart comparing the iPad 2 to other smartphone devices, but the A5 in the iPad 2 is many times faster than Tegra 2 in the XOOM at graphics performance.

No, it doesn't use OMAP4. The iPad 2 is an Apple design(The 'A5') based upon the Arm A9 with a dual core GPU.
