I listen to morning talk radio to help the day go by faster (plus I love the Mancow show), and so far two different personalities, one extreemly liberal and one fairly conservative* had said some of the performances were closer to pornography then art 🙂thumbsup: from one, :thumbsdown: from the other). I'm wondering if anyone caught the performances last night and knows exactly what prompted these commentaries

*Conservative but rational, he's not a Limburgah or O'Riley
 
I didn't watch it last night, but I did watch the prelims on Sunday. I didn't see anything pornographic then, though the routines were likely drastically different on Monday ngiht. But Jesus, it's gymnastics. What are they supposed to do, stand with their arms at their sides and not do any acrobatic performances? Some sensual performances are to be expected, I believe.
 
Good looking females in tight clothing is fine by my books. Unfortunatly I wont be watching any olympics this year.

That's because a lot of them ARE 14 (and some are even younger), as young girls are more supple when they are young, and become more rigid as they get older, so they are at their prime at early teens. The oldest I've seen so far in the "women's" competition is probably 17-18, but males tend to compete in more than 1 games.

Interesting question. I've actually become an Olympics junky so far, but I'm more interested in the low-profile sports that we normally don't get to see at any other time. I have seen or plan on seeing at least a little bit from judo, handball, fencing, shooting, synchronizing diving, sailing, softball, field hockey, kayaking, table tennis, and badminton.

If you guys have a chance to see a badminton match, I highly recommend you do. I'm not joking when I say it's awesome! The shuttlecock(!) can travel up to 200 mph. Crazy stuff...
 
One thing that may have prompted the comments was the fact that Comcast broadcast high definition pr0n to 6.5 million viewers on the eastern seaboard by accident last night. At least that is what the news stations here are reporting.

The coverage sucks. The commentators feel like they have to make every aspect of the games some sort of intense drama. I watched the men's gymnastics prelims and if you believed the color commentator, every mistake the USA made was HUGE and that if they made one more they would be in trouble. By the end of the day they moved on to the finals and were comfortably in first...

Note to commentators: olympic competition is enough drama all by itself...

note 2 to commentators: mention what countries won the other medals in the event... :|

One more reason for the early ages in gymnastics is that at "older age" - over 20, let's say - the fear of accidents prevent them to do some really spectacular figures (i.e dangerous). I know there was a lady from Uzbekistan (?) in Europe Championships, at something like 30 years. But she looked like a 14 years old nonetheless.

NBC sucks at Olympic coverage. They should sit all these pontificating idiots in a room and show them tapes of ABCs coverage of the 1972 Munich games and maybe they can figure out how to do it properly.

My thoughts exactly. There were only two or three that I saw that even had a womanly shape. The rest look like 8 year old girls.
 
I find it rather humorous that you implied O'Reilly wasn't rational. I'm hardly a conservative (and I don't think O'Reilly is entirely conservative either), but any reasonable person can see that O'Reilly is one of the more rational political media personalities. Disagreeing with someone doesn't make them irrational, but providing arguable justifications for conclusions does.
 
the oldest person on the U.S. women's team is their captain, she's 25. The others are in their teens. I've been rooting for them. You'd have to be a perv to consider the sport to be porn. They are awesome athletes, and part of the sport is acknowledging their form. They are great examples of human physique and do amazing feats that many find awe-inspiring. More than anything, it's like watching our daughters strive for greatness.
 
porn?? hahah... geezes.... they look like little kids... wait.. they are. well, most of them. And it's kinda boring IMO (not that it's anything bad, just not my cup of tea... some of those gymnists all look like they could tear me apart 😛). Figure skating is closer to porn that this... ugh.. stupid
 
Women's gymnastics is about young women, wearing fight fitting clothes that tend to ride up into a thong, and doing moves like a stripper on the floormat. So why would you think it is porn?
