First off, they're not mine :p My wife has a ton of clothing that she doesn't wear anymore. What's the best way to get rid of it? She told me to just throw them away, but I was thinking we could sell 'em or something like that...I checked eBay, and there doesn't seem to alot of bidding in the clothing dept. Are garage sales effective? Should I just give them to the Salvation Army?

How do you figure out how much you are donating? Does the Salvation Army do that?

They give you a slip of paper that says you donated x bags of used clothes, you put your own valuation on them "using the official IRS method of determining the value of donated items described in form # 45599882004-Gf-45682 further notes are in form #IFJ-9338212058-GMD" or just make up a nice round number.

<-----uses second method

Can you give me ballpark number of how much you can deduct per item?

$1,000,000 each. Give or take $999,999.

How much to deduct, well if you want to be reasonably accurate about it just list the approximate amt you'd pay for the item used @ a garage sale. It really depends a lot on the name brand of the clothing and how worn it is. If anything is new or like new then deduct more, you just don't want to be so over the top you invite the extra attention of the IRS.

Donate it!!! After we had a garage sale we donated what was left to the Salvation Army. It was mostly womens clothing and all quality stuff- Lazarus, Kauffmans and JC Penny clothing I can't belive it wouldn't sell. Anyway we took it in and took a write off of around $1800!!!!!!!! Man was I happy.

It depends on their quality and condition. Some used clothes do sell well on ebay.
