The "too fat to fly" line is a bit misleading. They are too wide for the seat and I see no problem in charging them extra if they can't fit in one.

I thought some airlines had a policy in which you have to buy a second seat if the plane is full, but if it's not, your fat ass gets a free ride, so to speak.

If you can arrange it, fine, but if I'm sitting beside some random fat person that is spilling over into my seat, I'm not fine with it. I'm rather pissed off by it.
that's fair.

we should also apply the rule to tall people who can't help but jab their knees into my back.

I have no problem at all with this policy. I've had some bad flights, notably one where my wife and I took turns sitting next to this large lady who also had a nasty skin condition. It was awful.

Shit, on a jet configured in 3x2 or 3x3, I am even willing to buy the 3rd seat in the row for my own comfort. The problem is, the fucking airlines won't let you do it. I'm not skinny, maybe slightly overweight, but not fat enough to buy an extra seat. If I were fat and had that option, I would totally do it.

Are there any airlines that let you buy an extra seat if you want to?

"But Tiggeman isn't looking for compensation."

i missed that part. guess she may be decent after all. 17" is kind of a small sppace to sit in when u think of it.

When was the last time you flew? Airline seats must have been designed for maximum discomfort. A 17" seat sounds more narrow than it actually is. You have to be fairly large to not fit within its boundaries.

What I got from this article is that the Southwest gate agent decided to have this conversation with her in public, in front of other passengers. If I had to guess, it took place at the gate counter. I think that if you're going to ask someone to make a concession based on their physical size, it might be more decent to do it in a private area. If that's how it really went down, I feel bad for the woman, and Southwest was absolutely wrong.

Humiliating your customers is a bad business practice. Southwest gets 90% of my airline business because I felt they were more likely to treat me like a human being than any other airline, even though I was Silver Elite for a while on US Airways. For the most part, Southwest does treat a regular customer as well or better than the lowest status tier on other airlines, IMHO. This story obviously does not fit my experience.

Seriously, you were all like "have fun and keep a strong faith" last night. Why are you calling me names now??

yesterday i thought u were a good christian boy, working towards a greater good. today i see this:

Yup, if your fucking fat ass just won't fit on the seat then you can't fly.

Nope, I just bottle up all (or at least most) of my anger, frustration and disappointment (especially at SC) and unleash it all upon the internet.

for shame, for shame. dont let satan poke your butt. fight the urge to be dumb and control yer anger

Hmm... so after all of the times you've seen me act like a complete fool on these forums, this was the time you decided that you want to look down upon me in a judgmental light?

What is this religious bullshit? This is about fat chicks wanting to fly.

Personally, I'm all for it, but they have to use a catapult.

An extra seat isn't going to make a tall person fit any better, short fry. Maybe they should just reserve the emergency exit rows and bulkheads for people over 6'2". :D

Willing to bet that it started out private but those fine ladies wouldn't have it and both sides escalated the situation unnecessarily.

I love how she says "people just see a fat person skin deep" or whatever when that really is ALL that is relevant in this situation. I don't care if your Mother Theresa, I don't want you overflowing into my seat for the duration of the flight. I think the make the fatties sit next to each other policy is a good idea.

By the way, anyone track down her blog and tell her that NOBODY wants to sit next to her, and especially not her mom?

I'm not. I've spent enough time in airport terminals to see just how lazy and inconsiderate that airline employees can be. I'd give the benefit of the doubt in a lot of situations, but when it comes to an airline employee hassling a customer, I'm going with the customer.

Haha, yeah, that did make me laugh. As though a character inquiry was going to determine whether or not she could fit in the damn seat. I also thought making them sit together was a fair solution, but it'd probably be pretty embarrassing after people all overheard the argument.

Airlines need to start posting their 'customers of size' profiles, charts, and policies in public so the agents can simply point to the signs when fat people ask what the official policy is.

Also, instead of airline vouchers and apologies, I'd offer them a free year membership to the gym of their choice. :p

No they dont.

Its not the responsibility of the business to ensure that the extremes of society are taken care of.

Its not like these people don't know they are fat.

I am sick and tired of telling people/companies they need to put in extra effort for fat asses.

You are a fat ass. Get over yourself.

The only thing that is being accomplished is society making it as if it is socially acceptable to be to fat to fit in an airline seat.

sounds like the 'women' knew the guy. i think its a scheme to sue.

in the chance that i am wrong, kudos to Southwest for standing up and telling them what we are all afraid to say

Their policy is simple - if your fat ass cannot be contained within two armrests, you need two seats. If you don't get two seats, you're too fat to fly.
