Clitoris hospital for Burkina Faso

Females with mutilated clitoris can now breathe a sigh of relief following the construction of a hospital in Burkina Faso that would specialize in the reconstruction of the sex organ. The US non-profit organization Clitoraid is funding the $50,000 project which is dubbed "Pleasure Hospital."

The ?Pleasure Hospital? situated at Bobo- Dioulasso in the western part of Burkina Faso will help women especially victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) wishing to have their clitoris restored after going through such ordeal.

?Pleasure Hospital? will offer free clitoral reconstruction surgeries to victims of FGM all throughout the West Africa region, according to the humanitarian news agency IRIN.

Mariam Banemanie, President of Clitoraid's local NGO partner, Voices of Women said "Clitoraid decided to build the clinic in Bobo-Dioulasso because it is at the crossroads of several West African countries." "The clinic will restore justice and give women the ability to feel sexual pleasure." Banemanie said whiles questioned "Burkinabé women are beginning to stand up for what they believe in - why should sexual pleasure not be a part of that?"

Some female journalists were striped naked in Sierra Leone early this year for mere reporting on FGM. The World Health Organization (WHO) which defines FGM as ?any injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons? said over three million girls are at risk of it.

Abi Sanon, 36, who went through the reconstruction of the organ at a private clinic in Ouagadougou in 2006 after it was cut at a tender age said "I wanted to find my integrity and to know real pleasure. The procedure cost $320; my boyfriend contributed. It has really changed our lives. Before, I did not really know what pleasure felt like, and now it is not my boyfriend who calls the shots in our relationship - it is much more equal," she said.

Sanon told IRIN she was surprised at her family?s positive reaction when she informed them she had wanted the surgery, since she said talking about sexual pleasure is still seen as taboo in her country.

Her 70-year-old mother has expressed interest in having the procedure once the hospital opens.

Wow, that is awesome! FGM is a really horrific procedure, both in intent and execution. I can imagine how far this will go to be psychologically, as well as physically, healing for women who have endured FGM.

To reclaim part of herself that was taken from her by force. If you were forcibly made a eunuch at age 5 and then found at age 70 that you could be made into a "man" again, would you do it?

This is less about sexual pleasure than it is about women's rights. Consider how terrible and violating it is for women to be raped, and then compare that against a very young child being permanently disfigured in a way that is guaranteed to produce pain for the rest of her life. Peeing can take an hour and produces pain; childbirth literally rips a woman open from where they sewed her up and left only the tiniest opening.

I'd strongly recommend Desert Flower by Waris Dirie to everyone who has even a passing interest in this topic.

I can't believe they wrote "Clitoraid".

EDIT:

Just out of interest what religion and/or culture actually practices this horrible procedure?

It's almost as common in Africa as circumcision is in the West.

On that note, I want my foreskin back.

I don't really have an opinion or comment on male circumcision, but I would note that it's an apples to oranges comparison to female circumcision. In females they typically remove the clit all together, and they sew together the inner labia to leave a very small opening (supposedly increasing pleasure for the man because it's tight.) Women who are not circumcised are considered something between lower-class peasants and whores, depending on the area, and they often cannot be married in a culture where their social value is based upon them being married. Sex is painful, peeing is painful, childbirth is painful. Whatever your view on male circumcision, at least it's not a choice between lifelong pain and being a social outcast.

That isn't funny dude. I did a little reading and it is a horrible and disgusting practice that serves only to humiliate and force women into submission. Gawd. Sorry. Just a little grossed out and pissed off about what I read.

Africa really is in horrible shambles. Between this and raping virgins to cure AIDS, I don't know how you could ever fix it.

The women I have slept with all needed vaginal reconstruction by the time I was done with them.....

On a serious note, I wish every asshole male who ruins a girl's life with this nonsense could be round up and shot. Mutilation like that is just one more reason Africa is the biggest shithole on this planet.

The solution is education and exposure to other ways of doing things. To some extent the fathers that do this to their daughters are doing it because they think it's both necessary and beneficial. They honestly believe it will help their daughters keep their virginity, be more desirable brides and win better husbands. :( Societal change is a long slow process.

Female genital mutilation is a terrible practice, but it is not performed by men, or even supported by men as much as it is by women. FGM is performed only on women with status in their communities, so the end of FGM would serve to undermine their status. I think there is a similar perspective on male circumcision here; circumcised men want their boys circumcised to legitimize their own circumcision.

I am in no way justifying FGM, or equating it to male circumcision, but I think we should recognize it's complexities.

That is definitely true; the blame in this is larger than gender finger pointing since it springs from a larger societal and cultural understanding.

No, we dont need to "understand" it. They need to stop the barbarism, or remain forever as the world's bastard stepchild that noone likes to discuss except Bono.

I had always thought it was done by men, although I knew it was only done to women of status. I think I have to agree with OCguy though, this practice disgusts me so much I think that a some executions might go a long way to ending this practice, but that may just be the part of me that is so disgusted speaking.

I suppose you think we need to study the nuances between cultures before someone does something about Darfur as well? (I think the AU needs to do something not us)

Bleeding hearts, I swear...

We can't end FGM if we call it's supporters barbarians and choose to remain ignorant about their culture. If you don't respect people, why would you expect them to listen to what you're saying?

I didn't say that. I simply believe that you have to treat people with respect and dignity, and take a few minutes to learn about their practices before you judge them.

Anyone who mutilates girls does not need to be treated with respect or dignity. They need to be hanged.

We have done some pretty shitty things here too...Should every person who supported the internment of the Japanese be hanged? You are a bigot against gays. Should you be hanged? Take your moral high-ground elsewhere.

Id be interested in you backing that statement up.

I didnt intern any Japanese, so I can look at the barbaric female mutilators with any high-ground I want ;)

But your father or grandfather probably would have supported it. Just as they would have likely supported coverture, marital rape, segregation and slavery if you had ancestors back then. They would have been for the genocide and displacement of Native Americans. If they weren't in support of these, they likely would have had no opinion or have been uninformed.

We have a terrible history. To judge the atrocities of others without considering it is to be a fool.

EDIT: you don't care about homosexuals. You place no value on our humanity, and do not blink when we are oppressed. Perhaps bigot was the wrong word. However, a more accurate word would probably violate the rules against personal attacks.

Dude, I'm the last person to be on the same side as n yusef but you do need to go back and reread his post. He wasn't saying that we need to understand the practice and tolerate it, he was saying we need to understand the culture so we can change the way they think and act, putting an end to this practice. He never said that FGM should be left alone because it's a cultural practice.

For them to stop the barbarism they need to understand that it's barbaric; right now they think of it as appropriate and even necessary. You don't change people's views and actions by jumping in and doing executions (or you'd have a lot of orphans) but by gaining the respect of the leaders, talking to them, and having a few people in high places proudly declare that they are leaving their daughters intact. They set the trend and the rest follow. THEN you can put in laws and start punishing those that cling to the practice in the face of opposition.
