Now, the reserve parachutes have a pretty hard opening already - they are made to open as fast as possible. The main parachutes have semi-progressive or progressive opening (for the progressive opening there is hardly any shock during opening).
Also, reserve parachutes are smaller, and descent is faster. I think there was some humidity in the parachute, and it affected the cords.

Crazy! She must have hit something softer on the floor.

The powerlines may have slowed her desent but she still hit the ground right? Must have been at least grass but that'll be dam hard at whatever speed she is slowing down from...
