China heckler at White House charged

A heckler from the Falun Gong spiritual movement who disrupted a White House appearance by Chinese President Hu Jintao was charged in federal court on Friday with harassing, intimidating or threatening a foreign official.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Washington said the misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of up to six months in jail.

The woman, who entered the White House grounds as a reporter, interrupted a formal arrival ceremony between Hu and President George W. Bush on Thursday and shouted: "President Hu, your days are numbered. President Bush, make him stop persecuting Falun Gong."

The embarrassing episode marred the South Lawn event and created a diplomatic stir. Bush personally apologized to Hu for the incident.

U.S. officials identified the woman as Wang Wenyi, 47, a reporter with The Epoch Times, an English-language publication strongly supportive of the meditation movement that is banned in China.

Spokesman Channing Phillips said she was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service and that the U.S. Attorney's office decided to proceed by filing the federal charge in court.

The law at issue bars harassing, intimidating or threatening a foreign official in the performance of their official duties.

When she was arrested, the heckler was charged with disorderly conduct. The spokesman said that charge, under local law, could be brought later.

OMFG! WHAT HAPPENED TO FREE SPEECH IN THE U.S.?
And to top it off, what she said was NO WHERE NEAR "harassing, intimidating or threatening"
I am shocked and disgusted at my government!

Everyone knows there are "Free Speech Zones" at Bush press conferences...usually 2 or 3 blocks away, so they won't be seen or heard...

Oh and if it were boosh up on the stage giving the speech and some hackler started screaming you don't think they would get the same treatment?

Freedom of Speech? Pffft! Remember boosh thinks the constitution is just a piece of paper... You just ignore that your rights have been taken away since 9/11...

And good luck getting them back.

If it was some nut job interupting a boosh speech it wouldn't have even made the news... AND... They would have been beaten no doubt for the action...

I am sure this happens all the time to boosh, the news media just censors it out...

Civil disobedience is not only nessasary but healthy for democracy when the peoples voices are stifled.

The fascists have to go, here and in china. They can only push so far before freedom bubbles over.

"Your days are numbered" sounds like a threat to me. I think if someone walked up to just about any public official and said that you probably would be arrested or at least questioned........

It is true, all totalitarian regimes days are numbered as long as the people can find a way to free themselves. It is only a matter of time.

No, that was hate speech, there is a big difference in victimizing someone becasue of how they are born and critisizing a opinion. Like I said give it up, if you want to think republican = a race of people then you are a lost cultist not worth my time anyhow.

a opinion or view does not = a physical trait or born with predisposition

What you propose is nothing less then the key to unleash the chance to be able to justify victimizing whoever you want based on who has greater power.

You are one screwed up individual if you think this, we live in a civil society, we left the jungle long ago and the might makes right concept with it, welcome to america genx this is not china where a tank running you over is the law.

Apparently you didn't read the law. I'd consider what she did harassment, although I'm glad she spoke out against him. Too bad the people of China couldn't see it.

WOW. You wrote three whole sentences.
Unfortunately your understanding of the Constitution is lacking. Harassment is not the speaking of an unpopular or inappropriate phrase. When a public figure goes to a public event freedom of speech ALLOWS criticism.
Calling criticism "harassment" is just plain wrong and shows a lack of understanding our Constitution.

To shout that somebody's "days are numbered" is a threat and as wetech posted, there are laws that protect foreign officials.

How is that a threat? She was a woman and was alone, obviously not trying to hurt him. She didn't storm towards him. It's obvious that it was just a fact, that his days as president are soon to be over since there's trouble with the communist party.
