RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Richmond woman upset after she's ticketed for her daughter drawing on rocks with chalk.

Lots of people go to Belle Isle to enjoy the warm weather. That's what Susan Mortensen said she was doing when she came down with her four year-old daughter and used some sidewalk chalk to draw on some of the rocks.

Now she's banned from all city parks.
..and banned from all city parks. wow, i can see them ticketing folks for drawing dongs on rocks, but seriously, what the frack? video in link.

Officer Stacy Rogers patrols Belle Isle. He's the one that wrote the ticket.

He said his goal is to keep the park clean for everybody.

"Essentially what we're trying to do is leave behind only footprints when they come into the parks," Rogers said.

He said chalk doesn't always wash away in the rain and often city crews have to come clean it.

competly understandable. from the title i was thinking her driveway and i was ticked. but its a park . you don't do t hat shit at a part have some fucking respect.

While I understand the need to prevent the chalk, I think a warning would have sufficed in this situation...

It's chalk. What kind of chalk doesn't wear away with the rain over time?
It isn't spray paint and the little kid probably didn't know any better.
Banning permanently is totally ridiculous.

This is ridiculous. IT WASHES OFF!

What if it had been spray paint? She probably would have gotten the death penalty!

Completely understandable. It's a park, not a sidewalk. It's on rocks, and chalk doesn't always wash off. As the park ranger said 'leave only footprints, take only memories'.

Chalk doesn't always wash off in the rain. It doesn't bother me in the neighborhood, but it often takes weeks for it to go away. This is a park, not her house.

Have some respect for others around you, WTF people.:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Yeah I thought it was for writing on the street, but in a park is a bit of a difference. Problem not found. Banning might have gone a little bit to far.

Not just in a park parking lot either, but it was on boulders and rocks inside the park.

If you're too dense to realize this is not ok then you really should be banned from the park systems. We need to start doing this to all the idiots, and maybe they'd wake up a bit before being assholes to everyone else in society.

ticket, sure. Banning is excessive. Maybe park should alter ticket to something of equal fine but no banning, similar to traffic court.

That's stupid. Don't bring chalk for your kids to draw all over a park. I'm glad she got a ticket.

But NBC12 Legal Analyst Steve Benjamin says he's not sure Mortensen should have been ticketed at all. He says you're not responsible for the actions of your child

Wah? Since when?

It's chalk. What kind of chalk doesn't wear away with the rain over time?

I see it alot in my neighborhood. I have no idea what kind of chalk they use but it can last through a rain storm

not always and not easy. I swear each brand of chalk is diffrent. We had some my kids did on the driveway that lasted 2 pretty good storms. finally got it off with the power washer (i was cleaning a few ATV's)

I have never seen magic chalk that doesn't wash off after the first rain. Retarded. But regardless, the idiot cookie cop park ranger should have said "Hey don't let your kid do that or you'll get a ticket next time." And there's a 99% she wouldn't have let it happen again. Problem solved.

I'd like to know more about the story, I wonder what the mother's tone was when the ranger asked them to stop.

not always and rocks are not smooth like a sidewalk or drive way. PLUS I DONT WANT TO GO TO A PARK AND SEE KIDS DRAWING ALL OVER THE ENVIRONMENT. do that shit at home in your driveway or sidewalk.

fine yes.

ban on all parks, thats a bit much.
