UPDATE 8/24: Woman identified

(condensed)
A woman who was filmed putting a cat in a wheelie bin has been offered police protection after being identified by the RSPCA.

The grey-haired suspect was tracked down after she was caught on CCTV by the cat's owners, Daryll and Stephanie Mann, at their Coventry home.

Sky's Lisa Dowd said the woman was offered police protection because of the "level of vitriol against her".

She said residents in Coventry were extremely angry, and death threats had been made against the woman on the internet.

"West Midlands Police are taking her safety extremely seriously," she said.

The RSPCA said it was "appalled" by the woman's actions and was continuing investigations to decide whether to bring charges against her.

A police spokesman told Sky News: "The RSPCA are leading an investigation into the incident and will be interviewing the woman shortly.

"Coventry Police are supporting this investigation and urge the public to leave the matter to be dealt with correctly by the authorities.

"Coventry Police have not arrested the woman because she has not committed a criminal offence."

original story:

A middle-aged woman in Coventry has been caught on CCTV putting a cat into a wheelie bin for no apparent reason and walking away.

The tabby cat, named Lola, was trapped in the bin for 15 hours before her owners finally found her.

Darryl and Stephanie Andrews-Mann thought she may have fallen in herself or been put there by louts, but were shocked to discover that a woman had put their pet in the bin deliberately.

CCTV footage shows a middle-aged woman with grey hair walk past a house on Brays Lane, Coventry, when Lola jumped onto a garden wall.

The lady stopped to stroke her. Seconds later, she glanced around to see if anyone was watching before picking up the cat, dropping her into a nearby wheelie bin, slamming the lid shut and walking away.

Darryl, 26, said: "I'd like to know how she would feel if she was stuck in a bin for 15 hours without food or drink.

"It was really hot day outside. I searched nearby alleyways [for Lola] but suddenly heard a tiny meowing coming from the bin. I looked inside and I found her in the bin. She was terrified and covered in her own mess."

The couple installed CCTV outside their home two years ago after their car was repeatedly knocked by careless drivers.

The RSPCA and West Midlands Police are now investigating the incident.

I don't condone harming animals, but my property is not your cat's litter box.

Just think of all the casually cruel and ugly things people have done and do to animals and each other that have never been caught on camera. This makes me sad. :(

I think someone who casually does this just for the fun of it would do something similar to kid. There is no point to it except she's sadistic. I mean guys who do the dog fighting probably do it for the money, cred, criminal connections etc. so there is an end game. It's still very wrong but there seems to be a rational behind it. This seems very evil for the sake of being evil.

That was weird, looked like she was enjoying the kitty and even petting it. Then she sees the trash can is like hmmm.... WTF?

That's terrible. Kitty was being all friendly too! Hopefully she gets hers if/when she's caught and ostracized by everyone she ever knew.

In a way she actually helped the cat. If it was a stray it would have probably died quickly... either hit by a car, eaten by a predator, or frozen to death. It's incredibly lucky for the cat that someone found it and brought it to a shelter, where it will be cared for.

What a horrible thing for someone to do, though. I don't know why anyone needs to go out of their way to harm animals.

EDIT: I guess it wasn't a stray. Maybe the owners won't let it out anymore. I don't let either of my cats out; one escaped one time and it was nerve wracking to say the least!

She did it deliberately and had it in mind from the get-go, I believe. Especially in Britain but also here, there are a lot of anti-outside-cat people who decry the large number of songbirds and animals that some cats kill but don't even eat.

My guess she is one. I hope she gets caught and suffers some meaningful consequence, even if it just the scorn and derision of her neighbors.

She reminds me of the insane hypocrisy demonstrated those who murder abortion doctors in cold blood to uphold the "sanctity of life."

I don't condone what she did...but we have thousands of feral cats loose in our neighborhood, downtown and even at the local University. I can't stand when i see idiots feeding the feral cats here. The cats cause some serious problems, have actually attacked and harmed people, makes some of their habitats extremely smelly and are a health problem.

Of course this cat in the video being trashed was a domestic cat owned by someone, and the lady was just being a douche...
