Wow.

Hollywood sure has distorted the reality of what kind of damage firearms do.

Umm. Elbow is a solid bone. A .357 mag slug would do some SERIOUS damage to a joint of that nature. And the .357 is a HUGE round! Considering a 9MM Para round would at the bare minimum break the elbow, a .357 mag slug would most likely do a lot more damage, if not destroy the joint completely.

And, FYI, I use assault rifles, machine guns and howitzers for a living.

How's the recoil on what she used with these rounds?

You're right, if we make gun ownership illegal then all gun related crimes will instantly be wiped out. Criminals wouldn't dare break such a law. In fact, I propose that we make crime illegal, that will stop all crime. You sir are brilliant.

So if he would have died would she be charged with anything?
Just seems weird that she is not getting charged with anything for firing a 357 in public at someone trying to steal her necklace, but I guess thats legal there.

On another note, if more trained and responsible people got carry permits and actually carried a gun we'd have a lot less crime.

Just had a good article in our local paper that showed the steady rise of concealed carry in this area. We're up over 1% of the population with current/valid cpl's now, closing quick on 2%.

A .357 is the same size as a 9mm. Or did you fail at metric conversion? (9mm= .35433 inches) The charge is just more powerful and velocity is higher.

How much damage in this case is very dependent on what type of round she used. Since she was headed to the range I'm willing to bet it was a simple jacketed round. Broken bone? Sure. Shattered joint? Unlikely. Destroy the elbow? Impossible.

Oh, and...assault rifles, machine guns and howitzers ... OH MY!

Yeah, it's legal because it is self defense.

The part that I worry about is the fact that firing a gun in public could accidentally hit innocent bystanders. :(

Well, in truth we don't have enough information, though I'd chalk it up to double-standard. If I shot a guy who wasn't armed for trying to rob me in public I'd probably face charges. She's getting away with it because she's in a wheelchair and is older. Or maybe it's just legal in New York to do that. *shrug* Self-defense laws in the US are pretty messed up, but they're starting to get better.

That shouldn't be flamebait. You used two key words there - "trained" and "responsible." Therein lies the problem though, is verifying that someone has truly been adequately trained on proper firearm usage, and that the person is truly responsible.

Really, in an ideal world, everyone should be able to carry a firearm without anyone ever needing to use them. Though it'd be an odd sort of ideal world where everyone felt compelled to carry them. Maybe they just live under constant threat of alien invasion. The world is ideal, but the interstellar neighbors aren't.

Fictional example: Jedi. They've got a lightsaber and the ability to predict incoming enemy attacks. But they don't just go on killing sprees. Use it in defense, never in attack.

Anyway, the news story - good to hear about someone using a firearm as a means of defense. I only hope that she exercised care when aiming and firing so as not to injure any bystanders, if there were any.

And I don't know why I thought of this:
"Hot damn, I just tried to get a necklace, and now I got a bullet too! I am awesome!"

stab stab stab

At which the lady would be at an extreme disadvantage. Nevermind the fact that the law of supply and demand will always reign over any law overturning our right to own guns, much like our drug laws; People will still have them...

Ooooh...SOOOOO superior, eh? Let me give you a small heads-up. And no I didn't fail metric conversion. Not that I should have to because only american companies still use that FVCKING STUPID UNIT OF MEASUREMENT.

THISis a .357 Magnum round.

THIS is a 9MM Parabellum round.

The .357 round may be similar in total slug size...but the magnum packs a WHOLE lot more punch than a 9MM...severely so.

And do you use high-powered military-class weaponry? Have you fired a howitzer? Than you have no right to say "Oh my" because it's an experience all in it's own. So, kindly STFU.

Actually, I'm an Army infantry veteran. I was a TOW gunner for part of my military career, infantry for the rest. I have a bit of experience with firearms. Actually over 30 years experience. I don't give a flying fsck how much experience you claim to have with artillery. That means sh!t given the .357 is a purely civilian round.

The .357 is NOT a "huge round." That was your first mistake. It's the same width as a 9mm, and slightly longer. Secondly, the difference between the damage to the bone between a 9mm and .357 would be neglegable... especially at close range. The major difference would be in the type of round fired, i.e., hollow point, jacketed, or unjacketed.

I don't care if it's a .44 magnum. A pistol round is not going to take off an arm or destroy a bone beyond repair.

And no, I will not STFU. I hate the Hollywood induced mythical ignorance of firearms spread by ignorant little sh!ts like yourself... and will counter it everytime it rears it's stupid little head. Idiots like you just add fuel to the anti-gun nonsense.
