A Colorado woman is facing a $500 fine from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for saving a free apple she received as a snack from Delta Air Lines on her way back to the United States from Paris, France.

Crystal Tadlock told Fox 31 Denver, toward the end of her flight from Paris, flight attendants passed out apples in plastic bags as a snack. Tadlock put the fruit in her carry-on to save for when she was hungry during the second leg of her trip.

Tadlock told Fox 31 she’s frustrated with the incident and feels Delta should not have passed the apples out to customers or should have at least reminded passengers not to take the fruit off of the plane.

Apparently it's Delta's fault she lied on her customs form. (Also ffs don't give the airlines any more reason to cut service) Yes there is a small chance she forgot but considering that she is blaming everyone but herself despite her admission she planned to eat it after Customs I suspect she did not handle her interactions with the CBP particularly well. They are also quite clear on the Global Entry expectations during the application process and clearly state that you will be held to a higher standard. There are also places out there less forgiving of mistakes like New Zealand.

IMHO, Fox picked them up just because Delta pissed off the NRA. This lady got what she deserved, IMHO.

I just flew from the states to Australia about 10 days ago and they announced a couple of times to not take any food off of the plane because it is illegal, but this was Virgin Australia not Delta.

If she had more than 1 "illegal" item then yeah, but for an apple the agent wants to fine her $500? This is a little extreme, no?

Agents usually just throw these stuff in a big trash can they usually have nearby.

Usually they do. But I have a feeling this person probably showed her @SS and gave them grief about it.

and what happens to the fruit/food after deplane and the cleaning crew comes through? does the fruit/food get a special plastic bag (double bagged?) then off to the airport incinerator?

Most of them incinerate it, some airports send it off to be buried in a deep hole and I have occasionally heard of aircraft taking the trash back home with them although thats in more extreme cases like Venezuela where airlines fly with a second crew so they can do a quick turn around and no crew has to leave the aircraft

I read this yesterday, I find it controversial. On the one hand, she seems to be a seasoned traveler whom I would suspect is familiar with the nuances of claiming food and items with customs. On the other hand, Delta should be forthcoming when handing out food to passengers, assuming the passengers know that you can't keep the apple when going through customs isnt good either.

IMO, customs could've just tossed the apple in light of the circumstances. But when have cooler heads prevailed when traveling lol

I would guess that most people would assume that anything you get on the plane has been cleared for deplaning unless otherwise specified. To me its sloppy customer service to not remind people that something they handed you cant come off the plane.

Never been on a flight that gives fresh fruit, only peanuts and pretzels. If its illegal for the fruit to leave the plane at its destination, then I don't think they should carry it on the plane.
I have never declared the peanuts and pretzels on a customs claim form so I can understand why the lady might not have been thinking about declaring it.
