The focus shouldn't be on race, the focus should be on the fact that an animal committed this crime! And yes, thats the case I had in mind when I asked my question. I think theres been one or two others I can think of if I think real hard.

Now, to really make the point what we need is a comparison showing race of criminal versus number of times that race is charged with a "hate crime".

Point is, whites will more often get charged with a hate crime versus minorities.

As for how it appplies here, IF this woman is not of the same race as her killer do you think they will push for hate crime charges?

If a white guy killed a black intruder, I doubt it would be labled a hate crime.

If a black guy dragged a white guy behind a truck and told the cops, "I did it cuz I hate honkeys" I bet it would be called a hate crime.

I believe the 2 kids were white, and were not known as the best role models for others their age. During the attack they screamed racial slurs at them.
Is this a hate crime or a crime of passion, spur of the moment type of thing?
