GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a former New York woman pretended to have terminal cancer so she could have a lavish wedding reception and honeymoon.
The Times Herald-Record reports ( http://bit.ly/Hy08wo) an Orange County Grand jury has indicted 25-year-old Jessica Vega, a former Montgomery resident, with grand larceny and scheme to defraud. According to the indictment, Vega accepted thousands of dollars in donated services and goods after claiming in 2010 that she was dying of leukemia. The newspaper ran a story on Vega's wedding wish.
She married Michael O'Connell in May 2010 and the couple spent their honeymoon in Aruba.
Four months later, O'Connell told the newspaper that Vega was faking the illness.
The couple divorced over the incident, and O'Connell moved to Virginia. Vega later joined him. They have two children.
Vega was arraigned last Friday and pleaded not guilty. She's being held in county jail on $10,000 bail.

Nobody thought to confirm this before running the story on her?
I assume she had to lie to everyone--family, friends, to take it that far. Makes it difficult to confirm when her closest people all believe she has cancer.

Of course....there's the whole medical record thing. Sloppy, sloppy.

anyway--totally classy.

In the end she will have cancer, in the asshole.

Just let her payback all the money she got by the scam, perhaps probation/community service. The smug look in her face says "I've fooled everybody".

hope this bitch rots in prison for a long time. my dad died from leukemia and let me tell you those were some dark and hard times. it was with the generosity of others that helped our family cope and get through it. i really hope the actions of this piece of shit does not stop the people who do care and give what they can.

It won't, but it will cause people to be more cautious which is a good thing. She should be forced to pay back everything, forced labor whatever. Dumb wise and beautiful woman.

I am really confused by this article.

The woman fakes cancer to get donations and she uses it for a lavish wedding and honeymoon. Her husband, apparently unaware of where all this money was coming from, figures it out. Then he calls the local newspaper with a tip (reports her). Angry, he divorces her soon after and moves away. Then she moves to be with him, even though they are divorced. Oh yeah, they also have two kids.
