Why hold bicyclists to a higher standard when drivers routinely ignore the rules?

Eg: http://gothamist.com/2014/09/12/doored_cyclist_video.php
Guy on a bicycle, riding in the bike lane, has the green light, but then a cab stops illegally adjacent to it to discharge a passenger and gets doored as a result.

Or contend with people that illegally turn across the bike lane (sometimes resulting in a cyclist's death): http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2024421617_cyclistkilledxml.html

etc...

Not all cyclists are angels. Some are douches that salmon, etc. But that's hardly a reason to paint them all with one wide, ignorant brush.

Well when you only have one brush to paint with....

Guy deserves it after almost hitting a pedestrian himself at the 0:08 mark (he did the same "look out" thing without even bothering to slow down and missing her by a couple inches). He almost does it again at the 0:32 mark where the pedestrian has to rush out of his way. And last but not least he ignores the fact that the cab which "doored" him had his hazard lights on and thus he should be slowing down and cautiously passing the cab rather than barreling through full speed. Personally I think the bicyclist should get a ticket for careless driving and have to pay for any repairs to the cabbie's car.

At the 8 second mark, the pedestrians appear from behind a car, crossing illegally in the middle of the street.

At the same time, the cab was discharging a pedestrian in a place he isn't legally allowed to do so. It's against NYC law to discharge passengers into an active lane of traffic. The negligence of the cab driver is not canceled out by the fact that he had his hazards on.

Edit:
Yes, the biker should have been a bit more aware. At the same time, that doesn't excuse the illegal actions of others in the video - pedestrians careless walking across a lane of traffic (the bike lane is a lane of traffic), the discharging of passengers in an illegal spot. Or the constant threat of cars that speed up to simply cut you off when they want to make a turn.

In NY, a car can't ever turn right on red, probably because of pedestrian and crosswalks, unlike other places where its legal to do so when safe. So I would think the reverse would be true. A pedestrian shouldn't enter the crosswalk when the light is red.

Was she or was she not in the crosswalk legally? That is a key bit of information that is strangely vacant from the stories.

so you are saying a vehicle that had time to yell "get out of the way" that did not stop to avoid hitting her would not be in trouble?

The rider had enough time to yell at her but didn't stop? either because it couldn't or wouldn't?

naa. don't buy it.

In NYC, few drivers are charged with more than a ticket if they hit and/or kill a pedestrian. And as it stands under NYS law, "I didn't see him" is a valid and legal defense for hitting someone.

Just some examples of the insanity in NYC - hit a pedestrian? Maybe you'll get a ticket, but most likely, nothing will happen.

At the same time a New York City dump truck rumbled eastbound on 14th Street and turned south on Broadway. On the video taken in a Citibank on that corner, you can see the truck making a fast, seamless turn. If you look very closely, you will also see a shadow flicker in front of the truck’s right headlight

That was Ms. Buta, and the truck hit her square.

Ms. Buta, 21, an aspiring actress, the only child of immigrants from Romania, was no more.

Even at that hour, in the rain, witnesses screamed and yelled, and within a minute a police car pulled up. But the driver, who worked for the city’s Transportation Department, never stopped his truck; nor did he respond to pleas in subsequent days to step forward. Police investigators found him anyway. But to this day no one has been charged, or even gotten a ticket.

A half-hour later, Cooper Stock, age nine, was holding his father's hand in the crosswalk, beneath the walk signal, outside their home at the intersection of West End and 97th.

A taxi making a left turn killed him.
No charges have been filed against the driver of the bus that hit Shear. The driver of the cab that killed Stock received a traffic citation for "failure to yield to a pedestrian." If it's his first offense, he'll pay a small fine.

Try looking again and tell me what you see. She's not crossing in the "middle of the street," she's crossing at a legal marked crosswalk but having to go a foot or two around a car which is partially blocking it. For pete's sake there's even a freaking pedestrian warning sign right there. She has right of way and he was 100% in the wrong in terms both of legality and not being a huge asshole.

That's not a crosswalk and the sign is a warning about a crosswalk ahead, not right there.

Crosswalk or no crosswalk, that bonehead was FLYING. Going WAY too fast.

But this is apparently typical of ciclists in new york. They hop sidewalks when convenient (pedestrian) hog the road when convenient (car) and blaze down bike lanes when convenient (bike.)

They follow whatever law benefits them at the moment and have complete disregard for anyone's safety - even their own.

It's sort of like the motorcyclists who refuse to move over if a car inadvertently changes lanes into them. They may be legally in the clear (debatable) but they might as well put that on their headstone.

The issue with ciclists is not that most are douches, it's that they all stand up to support these blatant lawbreakers no matter what offense they've committed.

The one ciclist who rammed the cabbie was going WAY too fast. Cabbie had flashers on. Ciclist should be charged and forced to pay for cabbie's door.

This poor woman was crossing the road via crosswalk as she was creamed by yet another mouth breathing lance armstrong wanna-be ciclist.

http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Fairfield-woman-hit-by-bicycle-in-NYC-s-Central-5765942.php

Just another example of why ciclists in the car lanes is not a solution.

It's really no wonder that many cities and residents are fed up with these mouth breathing ciclists.

We build them bike lanes (paid for via vehicle tax/tag/licensing) to get them off the road and they insist on riding in the roadway because pebbles bend their delicate wheels and non lance armstrongs hold up their olympic training sessions.

It's really no wonder why these people get no respect on the road. Between blazing through redlights, intentionally and needlessly holding up traffic, refusing to brake when needed... This is what happens when an entire group behaves this way.

Too much missing information from the article to make an accurate judgment; but of course that didn't stop you from rushing to judge all cyclists[/] by this one example.

Not all roadways have bicycle lanes, when there aren't a cyclist has no choice but to ride in vehicle lanes. In most (all?) states a bicycle is considered a vehicle and must obey all rules of the road plus a few extra.

Maybe you don't give cyclists respect on the road, and if you don't give respect to cyclists you probably don't give any to other drivers, then it's possible you might be an arrogant and inconsiderate prick; judging from your posting history I think that is likely.

The issue with ciclists is not that most are douches, it's that they all stand up to support these blatant lawbreakers no matter what offense they've committed.

Why would you assume he's talking about all cyclists rather than the one cyclist we're talking about? THIS GUY needed to follow the rules of the road. All cyclists need to follow the rules of the road. That's just common sense and does not imply that most or all cyclists are not following the rules of the road.

Ciclists yield for no one. They are the most elitest bestest thing on the world, pedaling with the head held high and spandex wedged tightly into buttcrack. They rule the road.

Just read the replies in these threads. Hell even when a brakeless mouth breathing ciclist mows some poor old lady over in a crosswalk the nutters are still able to defend the ciclist.

Yeah no kidding.

Lets extrapolate his opinion to car drivers.

Some car drivers are idiots, ergo every driver is an "elitest bestest thing on the world" idiot.

Also, all pedestrians pay 100% attention as they cross the road while talking on their phones or listen to music.

As someone who myself rides a road bike regularly, and on the roads (though not in a major city), that guy in the video was reckless riding as fast as he was with all the congestion.

Bike lanes in major cities are horribly dangerous. It's just flat out stupid to sprint on tight city roads.

no. more info is not really needed.

IF a vehicle had hit her in a cross walk they would still face penalties.

He had time to avoid her or stop. he did neither or couldn't

Already said that. I still would like more details.

Edit:
There is a NYP article that says he was riding a 'brakeless triathlon bike'. If he truly had no brakes, what a moron - even if he did have the right of way. All bicycles operated on a public roadway should have brakes, a bell, and lights (the latter for after dark).

The bike in the picture has brakes. He could have been using the middle arm rests where he doesn't have immediate access to the brake levers. And if that's the case, then he is a moron for riding like that downtown New York.

Agreed, although the danger is usually to the cyclist. Same with bikers - if we ride irresponsibly it's usually our asses, but we could kill someone else.

Yup. Will be interesting to see ciclist legislation in the next few years.

The premise of the OP - that it's due to the biker being in a car lane rather than bike lane, is idiotic. Or, is there some city somewhere that has teleportation for people across bike lanes, but crosswalks across car lanes?

It sucks, but if it was a car that hit her, it wouldn't even be news, and you wouldn't be posting this vitriol. You wouldn't be calling the driver Michael Schumacher wannabe.
What sometimes happens is people ignore the bicyclist when they would have stopped for the car. They make a turn right into a biker's path, there was a lady killed recently in my area when a driver did that. The guy saw her, but assumed it was OK to go right in front of her and let her deal with it. Same with pedestrians, when they enter for crosswalk, they will wake sure a car sees them and wait for car to stop before proceeding, but they see biker going at same speed, and they will just go and let the biker deal with it, even though biker doesn't have same braking ability that a car does.
Well guess what, if you do that to me, I will do my best to brake, I have no interest in being in an accident and risking injury to myself or someone else, no matter how stupid they are. But if it's too late, I will brace myself to minimize injuries to me. That means turning my body so you get hit by my shoulder or elbow. I am not going to increase risk to my soft tissue and internal organs to make it cushy for you. So you are effectively getting hit by a 200lb mass with surface area of a brick going at 15 mph. I wish you the best, but at that point, whatever happens is going to happen.
