Actually what she's saying makes perfect sense, people on food stamps should not be eating TV dinners, she's right in noting that that person could use that money on a few whole chickens, a bag of potatoes and feed an entire family for 3-4 days. She also noted people with Frosted flakes in their cart, store-brand should be good enough, heck I buy store-brand and it's usually just fine. Also noted was a woman paying with food stamps had an Iphone5, a phone much better than what she uses. Then she was criticizing (and I can't agree more) fat people riding in the store's electric scooters instead of walking the aisles burning off a few calories, then when someone with a real disability needs a scooter all the fatties are using them.

One issue not mentioned is that many poor folks live in situations where they don't have access to an actual kitchen to cook things like fresh chickens. Also for some stupid reason (at least in Connecticut) buying fresh cooked chicken isn't allowed with food stamps while the TV-dinner kind is just fine?

whaa? they don't have an actual kitchen? sorry to burst your bubble but if you are on section 8 or such part of the law is it has to have a kitchen. that claim is a little far fetched..

the idea on not allowing pre-made food even from a deli is so they don't use it at fast food joints.

And you know, that's the thing. Even those this is a satire article, it has some good points. But we only see the surface of it...there are plenty of people who are working hard & are on food stamps, or have had bad luck and are on food stamps, and are making better choices about their food & their health - we just don't see them because it's not as blindingly obvious as someone loaded up with a cart full of junk food paying with food stamps ahead of you.

I've also been watching a lot of documentaries on food lately & it's opened my eyes to the struggles that people in those more permanent low-income situations have to deal with. Not all of them have a good education, or clearly understand how their food choices affect their health. They have a need for food & fill it with things that taste good, or having screaming kids who can be placated by junk food, or whatever. It's a tough situation. It's easy to say "just dig yourself out of it", but we also don't know people's backgrounds.

I've had several friends who were doing pretty well their whole lives because their luck changed for the worse...they lost their job & eventually their savings ran out, or they hit a serious medical issue that drained all of their financial resources. And these were people actively trying to contribute to the community & do good work, not sell drugs or do crime or be couch potatoes.

The writing is funny, but the unwashed premade-food-eating masses outnumber those judgmental and ignorant.

The woman herself is what's funny. Like she feels she so justified as to judge others when she doesn't know their lifestyle at all. But if you can afford brand, fast frozen items and make it last all month then what the hell difference does it matter if you instead make everything from scratch as if you were Amish? They are each allotted certain amount of food stamps a month regardless. Otherwise we might as well be Nazi's and tell people what they can or can't eat...and it won't stop there.

Bill O'Reilly thinks poor people shouldn't have refrigerators.

My oldest sister's disabled and her recently divorced and unemployed (for two years) son just moved in with her along with his ten year old son. He's sponging off her SSD and when they run short she calls my mother to ask for money (to the tune of a couple hundred a month). Just so my nephew can sit on his fat ass and smoke cigarettes all day. If she would refuse to give him money for his cigs they'd save at least $100 a month. She has faster internet than I do and premium channels on her cable that I don't. Add it all up and they're wasting at least $250 a month (which our mom basically picks up the tab for). Absolutely enrages me. Not to mention the crap they buy. Every one of them is fat... and not just a little. My sister's grandson is five feet tall and weighs about 200 lbs. I went over there recently and he was parked in front of the computer (that I gave them) alternating between a bag of gummie bears and Cheetos. They have the typical EBT card pantry filled with junk food and make regular runs to Subway, Taco Bell and Mickey D's. All the while living in government subsidized housing.

If they weren't bugging my mom for money all the time I wouldn't care if they lived like ignorant white trash - no skin off my nose. TLDR; so yeah, poor people are oftentimes they're own worst enemies and I don't have much sympathy for many of them. I know from personal experience with my extended family that you reap what you sow.

I’d just buy two whole chickens and a bag of potatoes—you could feed a family for a week on that and still have money left over.”

ummm no about feeding a family for a week.

Yeah, and the people who park in the fire lane because the forty feet from the parking lot is too damn far.

Ugh - I was at Kroger the other day and someone was parked in the fire lane so the passenger could rent a red box movie. There were spots less than 20ft from where they parked. Was it really so fucking far to walk that they couldn't park there instead?

People who get pissed at this sort of thing are _much_ funnier. Yeah, it's dumb. But big fucking deal.
