I wonder how well it will run on my laptop.

It's based on id Tech 5, and RAGE runs perfectly on my laptop which is an ULV dual-core i7 and a GT730m at 1080p, so who knows.

I'm thinking its more of a recommended than a minimum. The minimum would be less.

Well it said requirements.

But then I noticed this:

These are the system requirements to deliver the PC game as it was intended to be experienced.

So yeah, it can run on lower. But then if thats the case the recommended video card is actually quite low compared to other games coming out this year, isnt it?

I mean, I'm grateful, it just seems a bit off.

All games will eventually want and use an i7 - Watch Dogs and Shadows of Mordor already say they need one. Creaky old Core 2's and i3's need not apply.
LOL. Thief's "recommended" was an i7. And that runs just fine on i3's (with and without Mantle). As others have said, they're talking about 2.67GHz i7-920's with about 40-50% lower IPC running 1GHz slower. And 8x console cores at 2GHz barely match an i3-4340. "Next-gen" console CPU's are nowhere near as powerful as people think, and a lot of these "it needs an i7" is simply them covering their butts for people who have 3 generations old i7's:-

heh i dont think anybody thinks they are

but regardless that has little to do with it because some people (ie. me) think that PC games are purposefully unoptimized because let's face it - desktop CPU's AREthat much more powerful than console cpu's. If the code was optimized at all we wouldnt need a new cpu even if you had a Q6600 still you would be fine. But the fact is vendors need to sell hardware, and they all work hand in hand to make sure the wheel of industry keeps on turning.

i happen to think a dual core intel desktop cpu @ 3 ghz has enough CPU power to run any single player game, and a quad core @ 3 ghz any multiplayer game. at any fps. but the games simply arent optimized because optimzation costs man hours and it costs the hardware vendors in lost sales that they would get. so it costs the software and the hardware camps. they need us to keep buying stuff man...

You can buy dual core sub 2ghz i7 models today that are much slower than even clarkdale i3s. So I don't really think it will be a CPU hog. Probably only loads two cores anyway. Old engine is old.

I don't think you'll need an i7 haswell or anything like that , but I do think you will need four cores so i3s won't be very good

I for one am glad about the higher specs requirement , raises the bar

Well it depends on whether the improvements in the game are commensurate with the increased requirements. It could also just mean the engine is not efficiently coded. I can see the need for a lot of CPU power for something like watchdogs, but for a shooter like this, not so much.

No, they won't. That's saying like all games will require a $400 GPU. Every game currently on the market runs fine on an i3.

Core 2 and i3 aren't even in the same generation of CPU. i3's are still being made to this day.

Next gen consoles have at least 6 threads at their disposal

Because they're slow. 6 slow cores uses less power than 3 fast cores.

Damn. I guess I'll have to chuck my i5 2500K at 4.5GHz and my 2 GTX 760 2GB SLI at 1241/7600. If it needs an i7 4770K recommended than 2 GTX 760 2GB SLI won't be enough, either.

I'm pretty sure it's an old i7 it's recommending, seeing as the GPU is 6850

Damn, whats better than an i7?
Cuz if thats the minimum and thats all I've got, how am I supposed to beat it?

Also, I have been meaning to move up from my GTX 460 and I suppose this summer is as good a time as any, yes?

You're supposed to take out enough to win but not more

Well, let's hope it's better than Doom 3. Annoying flashlight, anyone?
Hopefully developers will grow up and realize that societies capable of building celestials and space stations will also be capable of making flashlights which run for more than 30 seconds at a time.

Define fine. If you want stable 60FPS+ an i3 will not cut it for a pile of games. As for Thief that was a sloppy cross gen port based off an old engine. Its a far cry from Watch Dogs or say the upcoming Witcher 3 or Inquisition.

Yeah, if you want 120fps during 64-player deathmatches in Crysis 9, don't get an i3. It isn't an enthusiast chip.

30fps is plenty for most people and it's what game developers target.

I got a 290x on order to replace my 6950 so I'm feeling confident I can run it in all its glory. I'm more concerned that they don't screw up the game. That would upset me more than what is required to run it. But that's just me. :)
