Being a bit slow and not terribly alert, I just recently heard that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was available as a free download. I downloaded the client and found it to be quite a bit of fun to play. The graphics and sound are solid and the gameplay is fun and fast.
For some reason though, my client software quit populating the server list a few days ago. I can't refresh it manually, either. When I launch the game, everything comes up normally until I go to play online. No servers equals no game.
I am probably just going to uninstall and reinstall W:ET and see if that fixes it, but I was curious if anybody else here plays W:ET or has any suggestions.
Another bit of free gaming that isn't working for me is the HL2 Demo. I installed Steam then downloaded and updated the Demo. It was running fine but crashing and erroring out at certain points, and the saved game feature wasn't working. One day I saw an update for the demo downloading, and I hoped this would fix it.
It did, the demo doesn't run at all now. The game launches as far as the Menu screen, and as soon as I try to play the program crashes and Windows spits out a bunch of video driver errors. My Windows install is completely fresh, I'm running Catalyst 5.2 or 5.3 drivers, and every other game title runs perfectly (except the above mentioned server refresh error in W:ET). I'm playing EVE, Colin McRae Rally 05, Unreal Tournament 2K4, and Doom 3 regularly all without any hiccups at all.
I can't imagine the retail version of HL2 sucks this bad without me having heard about it. Is Steam the underlying problem? Is the HL2 Demo just a steaming turd? Does HL2/Steam not like the .Net Framework Catalyst drivers?
