i was wondering if there are any preferences on steppings for overclocking on the wolfdales.

i am thinking of picking up a e8200 c0. i would like to at least bump 500fsb--

e0 is preferable, but there isn't an e0 e8200 in intel's spec finder, so I'd go for an e8400 with e0, because you'll NEED e0 for a fsb of 500.

And you'll need a hell of a cooler for that fsb.

I wouldn't count on 500fsb, unless you lower the multi. 4gHz is the upper end for 8X00's, and you need a good cooler for that. Also, I wouldn't count on hitting 500fsb on that board.

500FSB is 4gHz for an e8200, 4.5 for an e8400, and 4.75 for a e8500. Without a good WC setup he's not gonna hit those FSB's

Also 500 on a P35 is far from guaranteed

The motherboard is of much greater importance, when trying to hit 500FSB, than the chip. Like the above poster stated, you can always lower the multiplier, but you can't always count on your motherboard making it there stable.

my experience so far it seems like the cpu is usually the problem hitting 500fsb but i haven't had that many samples to play with.

i know either of my ip35e's can do at least 470fsb. haven't got much higher because my best cpu just ain't got the guts for anything above 470fsb. i have tested my ram at 1180mhz so i have room to play there.

i figure a good 8200 c0 would do. but a e0 would be better in in the e8400? sounds good to me.

Nothing is guaranteed with any OC but the P35 and P45 boards have proven time and time again that they can run stable at 500FSB and higher. As long as you pick a quality board and stock it with quality components, I don't see 500fsb being a problem even on air cooling.

My old P35 Neo2-FR walked into 500+fsb easily with an E6550, E8400 and E3110. My current P45 Neo3-FR had no problems at 500+fsb with an E8500 and was able to POST at 500fsb with a Q9400 but I couldn't get it 100% stable.

EDIT: In my experience, RAM has been the most limiting factor for most people's OC's over 475 or so FSB.

I've had no probs with 500mhz+ fsb on E8xxx chips on P35. mobo was abit ip35E. Ram is #1 limitation. I mean seriously, there's people doing 700mhz FSB and 7Ghz... i don't think you're going to hurt anything at ~ 4ghz or 500mhz. (edit - just keep an eye on your temps & voltages)

Don't forget a good PS. A crappy or borderline PS can seriously affect OC results.
