Wolfdale and 680i?

Just curious...

I have a 680i SLI with the P32 (latest) BIOS from eVGA. I noticed with the latest BIOS, they mention "updated Wolfdale CPU microcode."

So, it should work right off the bat, right? I wouldn't mind grabbing an E8400 and playing around with it for a bit (I need a spare processor for another project anyway, the E6600 looks like a good candidate) as long as it works on my current motherboard. I don't see a reason to grab a P35 with P45 on the horizon, and I'm not touching 780i...

Thanks.

What's wrong with 780i? :p In any case yeah, EVGA stated the latest BIOS updates for most 680i boards will give them Penryn support, go for it, in worst cases you still have the E6600 in case the Wolfdale doesn't work, so no big loss.

Yeah...what is wrong with the 780i? I didn't think it was nearly as buggy as the 680i and had support for the wolfdales out of the box.....

I'm mainly staying clear of the 780i because of the extra chip used for the triple-SLI support (I forget the exact details). I just don't like the idea of it. I heard 790i was coming soonish, so if anything I'll wait for that. With the power consumption of my current graphics card, I'm not too worried about SLI support; the main reason I grabbed the 680i when I did was because it SEEMED like a better overclocker than many of the P965 boards at the time.

Not to mention I don't have the cash for a processor + motherboard right now. ;)

I like to build systems for ppl and spec them ones to build for ocer boards and I usually avoid the 680i boards unless they want SLI.....There are many very good P965 mobos that OC near 500fsb and are very stable...The P35 chipset is maturing and far more stable when it comes to ocing according to what I have seen....

I was putting my hopes on the 780i boards being better then bug plagued, very finnicky settings of the 680i boards.

Plus the 680i have never dealt with the quads as well as they do the dual cores....

I am glad things are working for you though
