As I understand it, WOL works the same way for standby, hibernation and shutdown but at the moment I cannot wake from shutdown, which would be desirable.

MB is Asrock 890GX Pro 3 with Atheros 8151 network adapter. Windows update tells me I have the latest driver for the NIC. In Device Manager in the Atheros settings, "wake from shutdown" and wake from magic packet are enabled. The pc does wake from sleep and hibernation.

Since I'm a complete novice at this is there something I am overlooking?

    TIA,
    Ron

Check the BIOS setup for a Wake on LAN option. Most motherboards have one.

Sounds like you need to turn it on in the bios.

Thank you all for your replies, but they don't address why WOL from standby and hibernate work but shutdown doesn't. Obviously the settings in bios and device manager are theoretically correct: Power on from pcie devics, wake from shutdown enabled, wake on lan magic packet. bwanaaa's link is useful but I'd done all that already. I think as he also suggests that either the MB or the NIC do not support wake from shutdown.

Pure Hibernation and Shut down are the same from this perspective.

In both cases the computer is totally Off. On Hibernation after start the previous status of the RAM is loaded from a file that was saved on the HD thus the computer comes up faster in the same status that it was before.

That said some manufacturer (especially with Laptop) has "crafty" ideas about Hibernation.

You can also invest few $$$ and get yourself a PCI card that is known to do WOL as it should, and disabled the on board NIC (personalty I do not like the Atheros onboard Giga NICs).

If you decide to buy a NIC[what I would do], get a Intel one. Well worth the price over cheap NICs.
