Woke upvery early this morning to some of the worst pain I've ever felt

So like 3am this morning I was jolted out of sleep by a massive pain in my calf. My calf was hard as a rock, my foot was pointed, and it literaly felt like someone had taken my calf muscle and twisted into a knot. I reached down and grabbed my calf, and the musle was all bulging, twisted, and hard. I was yelling in pain over this, and it woke my wife up, she started massaging my calf, which hurt like hell too. Eventually it stopped and my calf went back to normal, but it still had residual pain. Now today at work it feels like I've been doing calf exercises for two days straight, but other than that it's fine.

Anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? What causes this? It was the first time that's happened to me, and I sure as hell hope the last.

I get that sometimes, but not quite that bad. I usually stand up and try to stretch it out when it happens.

yup has happened to me a couple times

try eating more potassium (supposed to cut down on cramping)

also heard that having sheets tucked into the bottom of the bed can contribute since it might push back on your foot

ive had calf cramps before, but usually they only last a moment

i did have one as bad as what you described earlier in the summer, they suck 🙁

Yea, it was bad. To be jolted out of sleep like that with it is the worst, because you are like "WTF is going on????" It almost takes you a second to realize you're in pain.

What you have is simply a cramp. Common names are charlie horse, etc. It happens because the blood vessels that carry blood away from the muscle back to the heart to get pumped back to the lungs are too few in number and/or too small in diameter. Most of the time, it's the earlier of the two. Working out will solve that because your body will build more blood vessels in the muscle. The muscle generates lactic acid (google for more).

I use to get it a lot. Then I got bitched at by the woman for being a wuss. That is one of the worst pains I have ever had to deal with.

Mine came along due to stress. At least I thought so but when I did get them frequently I was way way out of shape so maybe it wasn't stress but just being out of shape after all.

I know my Dad gets it a lot since he started to have back problems (deteriorating discs from an injury as a heavy duty mechanic). He's always saying how painful they are, but I didn't know how bad it really was.

That sounds like something other then a muscle cramp, sounds more like his disc is compressing the nerve. Probably L4 or L5.

That pain feels different then a calf cramp, feels like it's coming from the inside of the leg sort of like a growing pain.

It sounds like a cramp. Don't massage while it's cramping, stand on it. Just put your foot on the ground and stand up like you normally would.

No, it was cramps according to his doctor (and him, exact pain I described). I just asked him about it and he said it's gone away now that he eats a lot of potassium. He had all kinds other problems due to the back injury, one of which was blood problems from all the meds they put him on. That led to him being deficient in some stuff, potassium being one, which apparently caused all the cramping. He aid he hasn't had one in awhile now.

It's a charlie horse. I get them while scuba diving for a long amount of time. To relieve the pain (and completely relieve the pain in my case the majority of the time) point your toes toward you and use your hands to pull them to you, stretching the muscle. Do this if you ever feel it coming and and it relieves it before the pain even begins.

Wow, this is your first time ever getting a leg cramp? Consider yourself lucky! I get one every couple of years or so.

What's even worst than getting it in the middle of the night, is in the middle of sex!

ROTFLMAOPMPFDOGHSBBQABC123LMNOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :laugh::thumbsup::cookie::evil::sun::moon:

Let me just start by saying, I couldn't even read this 'til I stopped laughing!!!!

Don't sweat it. It's nothing but a cramp/charlie horse!!

It doesn't matter how good of shape you're in......(I've had 'em when I lift weights regularly, not, run, bike, not, nothing, not, etc. etc. etc.)

They just happen.

I call it "CALF LOCK"!!! It's freakin' great once you realize it's harmless!!!! (Well, not great, but hilarious, nevertheless!)

Just wait 'til you have 'em & you know they're coming...........it goes something like this.........

twitch, twitch......."Hey, WTF is that?? Uh oh, is my calf gonna lock?? Let me slightly point my toe to see if it does..........BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh Ffvvvvvcckkk!!! Mother of all things beautiful...........Ffaaaavvvvvvcccckkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Then.........(both my ex & my wife did/do the same thing).............S.O. jumps up, starts rubbing the ****** out of your calf & you want them to stop, but you don't. You feel it & it feels like somebody stuck a boulder under your calf. It's truly the most unique pain you can have.

OK, I'm gonna go catch my breath now. Oh, and don't worry......I promise as your ATOT doctor..........you WILL have more in your lifetime. The haunting question is.............WHEN????????? Muuuhahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! 😎😀

I've gotten mild cramps in my calf and thighs while working out from time to time, but never anything like this, and never at night out of the blue.

I had one of those before while I was sleeping. It sucked. I rolled halfway out of bed to get some kind of support for myself while waiting it out. Then I kinda rolled back on and fell asleep. I forgot it even happened until I woke and tried to stand and wondered by my leg was so sore. :Q

Fun stuff.

Get that a couple times a year. Probably the most excruciating 30 sec. pain known to man.

i would vote "passing kidney stones" for most excruciating 30sec pain known to man.

ok this morning something happened to me, I woke up and when i tried to get up my left shoulder and the left side of my neck hurt so bad...Kinda like a charlie horse if i turn it in that direction (left) i get the same feeling as a cramp. I still have it, if i turn left i hurt so bad. I spent 30 mins trying to get out of bed, does anybody have an idea what the heck is wrong with me? I can't go out because i'd look like the hunch back of notre dame.

Here again............been there done that!!!

It should actually be your trapezius muscle.......(the one you can grab onto between your neck & your shoulder adjoining all of those things including your calvicle!)

You've *pulled* the muscle in your neck while sleeping. (I've done it awake and sleeping). I haven't had one for like 10 years, but they do hurt like an S.O.B. too!!

You try to look in that direction & you just can't for the sake of pain.

All you can do is wait it out. You will NOT stretch, massage, yank, tweak it out. It has to heal.

Use a heating pad and plenty of sports cream. Try not to stress about it (although it's tough). Just try & relax & know it's gonna be a couple days before you feel semi normal again.
