Woke up this morning with a cramp in my left leg

The pain was insane. The muscle in the lower part of my left leg was clenched tight, rock hard. I could not get it loose and it was killing me. Hurts bad to walk even now, a few hours later. 3rd time in my life this has happened to me, I wish I knew what caused it.

You need to stretch more often. Try to get flexibility in your legs. After that work out so that your legs won't spasm at night from lack of use.

i get those so many times, what i do is stretch my leg right away when the pain starts. it stops it from happening

watery banana shake.

calcium, potassium, and water. your body will adjust accordingly if it's got excess of all of the above.

eat banana!

you can loose your leg cramps by moving your foot while leg being stayed firm.

you are not alone. last year, i had BOTH legs cramped at same time! it wasn't funny at all. :|

The best way I've found to get rid of leg cramps is just to jump out of bed. Say you're waking up and you have to stretch. So you stretch and you start to feel one leg cramping up. Immediatly jump out of bed and walk on both feet. It gets rid of the cramp instantly for me...

It could be a sign of dehydration. I remember having a cramp like that, it was so bad, tears were coming out of my eyes from the pain (hey I was 10 when it happened).

I used to get horrible leg cramps at night back when I used to swim 6K yards per day. It was pretty horrible.
My understanding is that this is caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the muscle tissue.

The only ways I was able to reduce them were what people already suggested here.
1.) Stratch before working out
2.) eat more foods containing potassium (bananas are good)
3.) eat more foods containing Calcium (cheese ... mmm)

And if you've already got one, stand up, stretch, move your leg ASAP. It usually helps.

Yeah, when you feel it start to happen... whatever you do, don't bend your leg toward you, it'll make it worse. I know it's instinct to do that, but stretch it out straight or jump out of bed and stand up straight. Oh, and it's called a Charlie horse. We all get them every once in awhile especially if you've done alot of running or walking the day before. It sucks... especially if you get them in both legs at the same time, that's the worst.

It hurts like hell in one leg I can't imagine what it's like to get it in both at the same time. Still hurts me now when I walk.

dehydration can cause muscle cramps like this. I've never had ones that bad, but have woken up to insane cramp in my calf earlier this summer while I was traiathlon training. I read about it quite a bit in cycling and triathlon forums. Most people blame it on dehydration or some other nutritional imbalance.

Some people also just get them while others don't... go figure...
