Can somebody help. I have built a System based on the following:

FIC 503+ MB, AMD K6-2 400 with 96MB SDRAM, QUANTUM 10.2 GB, HD LS 120, SB64AWE ATI ALL-IN WONDER PCI with 4MB RAM had been working OK on Win95B until upgraded to Win98 SE. Now these are problems that I've been encountering. When computer starts to boot, sometimes it detects 32MB and after on and off switching it settles at the correct 96MB. Then it works with the usual Win98 and applications OK for about half an hour to 90 minutes and then locks or freezes. Reset or alt-ctrl-del brings system to either safe mode or scanning due to shutting down without using start. Here are some of the errors that I get:

1. Scan Disk detected invalid longfile entry on drive unable to fix it and run disk for Windows.

2. An 0E error has occurred at 0028:C0032276 Current application will terminate.

3. Explorer caused invalid page fault in module BrowseUJ.dll at 0167:7f332.36f Registers EAX 2f84d9ff or 0E at 0028:C003B668 in VxD VPICD(01)+

Windows 98 has been installed and reinstalled without any success at solving the problems mentioned. Anyone to H E L P !!!!!!!

Has the system ever worked before, or has it done this since you put it together?

If it's just started, what changes did you make?

If it's been that way since "birth", what BIOS version do you have flashed on the MB?

Yes, it worked for sometime even after upgrading to Win98 SE. Then there was problem with shutdown. Tried shutdown troubleshooting in Win 98. Unable to solve shutdown problem but used the system anyway. Reformatted Hard drive a few times because of error messages indicating errors on Hard Drive and reinstalled Win98 SE.

Bios is Award Ver 4.51PG 1984-97 and version 1.13JE12.

Presently, I am able to use it for an hour and just tonight got the TV of the AIW working continously until it froze with the mouse curser disappearing. The tuner still worked until I wanted to change the channel and then it restarted but could not get the normal working. It went through safe mode, scanning and the error messages started again. I'm sure it will work again for about half and hour if it remains idle for about two hours.

Whew, I just checked FIC's site and they have a new BIOS for that board, assuming you have the proper revision... I'm not sure where the revision number would be printed on your motherboard, but on my FIC PA-2013 it's in-between the PCI slots... It should say 1.1A or 1.2A or something like that.

Go here and download the latest BIOS for YOUR motherboard revision. I have JI438 on my PA-2013, for instance. If you have a revision 1.2A board, you'd want JE438 or JE439.

Be sure to follow the directions when flashing: I just rendered my system useless a month ago when I tried to flash a BIOS... the system hung when flashing and killed the system... I had to ship the BIOS back to FIC to have it re-programmed (royal pain, 2-week delay, etc). So be careful and read the directions!

Updating to the latest BIOS will probably affect Win98SE. Is there any way you could back up your software and do a clean install of Win98SE after you flash the BIOS? I'm betting that the old BIOS you have isn't ACPI compliant, and the new one is... That may have something to do with why you were having shutdown problems...

Try that and let me know how it works...
