Ok, so here's the thing. I've been rocking out on my Athlon 600, 256 megs of PC133 ram, GeForce (1) DDR vid card for quite some time now...over three years in fact. I've been planning a computer upgrade for some time now but never had the balls to do it.

So I made a goal for myself: upgrade before spring semester starts (which will be in 2 weeks). I wanted to get a computer that would last me just as long as my current computer did. I almost ordered a sweet A64 3000+ rig off newegg but I got some good advice from fellow Anandtech'ers who suggested that I wait seeing as how new mobos and video cards are around the corner.

So I'm torn. In all honesty I don't have many games, and the ones I do have run good enough on my computer (Starcraft, RTCW: Enemy Territory, Worms World Party) not to mention I have a MAME arcade system that has 4000+ games of its own.

I can afford a $800 purchase for a computer but do I wait or just get one now? YOU DECIDE!

I'd save your money and go for a Barton setup. But really, if your current computer does all you ask of it there's no real need to upgrade at all.

Well I wouldn't wait for those new mobos and video cards. Because as soon as you buy them you will kick yourself in the but since there will be newer mobos and videos cards around teh next corner.

Yes in a few months new stuff will be out, but it will be expensive, but that means that prices of current stuff may drop even more, but consider this.

Barton 2500+ ~$80
mobo ~$80 (depending on what features you need, more if you are an avid OC'er)
512mb PC3200 ~$80
Heatsink $20
plus drives or use your existing

The point I'm trying to get at, those main components won't set you back too much and should last you quite some time considering how long you've kept your current system. Or if you want to save a few more bucks, get an XP1900+ or similiar ~$50. You could always use that for now and dump it in a few months to upgrade to a cheap Barton.

Just buy it, cause when something newer comes out, you will be asking yourself if you should be waiting for the next generation. Something new is always around the corner, so what makes you think you will have the balls to upgrade your computer then? If your survived today with a 600Mhz set up, then there is absolutley no reason why you wont survive for three years with an A64 (hehehehe, almost sounds like c64;)) 3000+ setup. Just buy a computer now.

I know I know...but if I get something at half the price now, that's $400 more towards a newer computer in 1.5 years

I would wait for the Athlon 32432423543 7987983898435900+'s, with the ddr 5435348, and Socket 9054353453439490934.
If you wait for the next greatest thing you'll be waiting forever. Just get what you want now.
