... the father of both the McManus brothers?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boondock_Saints

and as they say their family prayer over Rocco, Il Duce arrives and sneaks up behind them. As he recites the family prayer with them, it becomes clear that Il Duce is actually the father of the brothers. He then joins them in their mission to kill all wrongdoers.

Is this confirmed?

Did their father leave them at an early age so they didn't recognize him the first time around?

Yeah it was so obvious

What if he was an uncle or a distant relative? How the hell is it obvious? You'd think they would recognize him the first time around when they shoot at each other.

At least now you know what that huge WHOOOSHING sound is that you hear every time you go and watch a movie.

Yes, i get that from wikipedia, but what i don't understand is why they didn't recognize each other to begin with. If they explained they were abandoned by their father at an early age, i'd get it. Who the hell forgets what their kids/dad looks like unless they don't see each other for a long time?

Do they ever mention how long he was in jail for? How old are the bros supposed to be?
They could have done a better job explaining that.

Well, it was obvious to me and my wife. Perhaps you shouldn't have eaten those paint chips as a child.

Did you see The Sixth Sense? There was a subtle hint at the end that really transforms the entire movie.

Clearly we should take everything at face value and draw inferences like feldernak and friends.

They said he'd been rotting in the can for 25-30 years or something, which is right around the age of the guys.

What's the age of the guys (they look older than 25-30 to me)? They didn't visit him in jail? Why the hell didn't he have a name?

The Sixth Sense's idea of the main character being dead throughout the film is very similar to the last story in the film Tube Tales (Steal Away) by Charles McDougall and Nick Perry. Both films were filmed in 1999 so it's difficult to say if the directors based their ideas on each other's films.

So the main dude was dead the entire time?

Is this confirmed?

I believe the movie said Il Duce was in jail for ~25 years, and the brothers looked like they were about 30.

I don't know what to say, every person I've watched this movie with has made the connection themselves or made this comment "whoa, it's the dad".

As long as you catch the part about it being a family prayer, I think you get it.

As for all the details, I haven't watched it in over a year so I don't remember if there is anything about them not visiting him or not having a name.
