i needed a APC PNET1 surge protector but newegg didn't have it and i didn't wanna order it from somewhere else so i used there "What products would you like Newegg.com to carry?" submission box. few days later i get an e-mail

I once made a suggestion ... the suggestion wasn't used but they sent me a cool tshirt.

I wasn't expecting anything for the suggestion, but I will admit that it was a great surprise.
 
Hmm, is that a good price for that thing? Seems kinda expensive. That'd be funny if you e-mailed them and told 'em 'thanks, but it's too expensive', so then they lowered the price since they ordered it for you to begin with.

The voltage spike is coming across the LAN cable from an outside staic source - lightning - you wearing wool socks - you cat - ect....

You but this BOFORE the switch/router - it will stop surges from blowing out what ever the first device in your LAN is, in this case a surge protector.

exactly! i lost a couple switched and a nic to a nearby bolt of lighting recently and i'm putting in one of these to keep it from happening again

in a lightning storm and such, it's easily possible to blow out your modem, your router, and/or the nic. If you have an onboard nic, then your mobo and maybe other parts will blow.

So in general... you might want them...
