This is really more of a desktop "replacement". 1600x1200 on a 16 inch TFT should be very nice with the Radeon 7500.

However, for far less than the suggested price of $3400, I would much rather have TWO computers, a decent Dell notebook for about a Grand and a desktop I can build myself and UPGRADE easily . . . (oh, I do have a Notebook and a desktop).

Man this is GREAT! Now the prices on the 15" PIII 1.2GHz laptops will come way down! All I need is a 15" (1024x768) screen, 1.2GHz PIII and a BIG hard drive.

yeah its a huge screen... but its also a huge laptop. i seen inspiron's with 15" screens and the border for the screen is very very slim. by looking at the pic of the 16" screen.. it still has some room to spare. any word on how heavy it might be?

You could get the 1.7 with Win XP Home only and it would be $2899... still way too rich for my blood, but I have XP Pro and Office XP, so youd save a few hundred that way.

Good lord that's insane. I can't wait for the 19" version. Pretty soon a "laptop" will be no more than a flat desktop chassis with a lift-up 19"+ LCD. and a pull-out keyboard. Haha. For that price tag, anyone can build a rig with a nice 17"+LCD and specs that would blow that laptop away.

Still very decent for a laptop, however.

Man, I just ordered my Gateway Solo 9550... oh well. I chose it mainly on it's biggest when I ordered 15.7" size. Now the sony blows it away and adds UXGA also. Too bad it comes with the Radeon 7500 rather than the Geforce4Go. I don't have any quibs with ATI but for some reason the fine folks at Dark Age of Camelot don't see it worth their time to fix problems with video cards besides nvidia. If not for the video card, I'd totally spend the extra $1000 for it. Screen quality is all you see on your computer so it's worth every penny.

...so that I could sell it and buy something I would use.


I had a laptop with a 15" screen and it was completely useless as a portable computer. It was way too big, heavy and unwieldy.
I don't even want to experience what it would be like to use a 16" laptop anywhere else but on a spacious desk, especially when trying to watch a DVD on an airplane.
There is a very good reason they call such laptops "Desktop Replacements".
