WMP11 won't start anymore.

To make a long story short, my windows media player 11 stopped working on my Vista Home Premium machine. Whenever I try to double click on the executable, nothing will happen. If I try to open a media file which starts with WMP nothing will happen. The latest version does not appear to be available for download off of microsoft's site which only offers WMP11 for XP. After doing some internet research I discovered that WMP11 is built into Vista which is why it is not available for download separately or something to that effect.

I am not sure why this happened or how to fix it. I would like to simply repair the installation of WMP11, but I do not know how to do that and nor do I know how to uninstall it separately. If I discovered how to do either of those tasks then I may be able to fix my issue.

All suggestions are appreciated.

WMP 11 can't be uninstalled in Vista. It is part of the integrated OS environment.

However - you can reinstall it this way. Download WMP11 from the website and then install it right over the existing one.

Unfortunately, the version of WMP11 that comes with Vista is a later version than what is available for download and an error occurs during an install of the previous version telling me that a newer version is already installed.

However, I did find the solution last night and I will post it here just in case others run into the same issue:

The official article with the solution:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925704/en-us

The steps in summary if you have Windows Vista:

1. Start
2. Find the cmd executable. Right click on it and select Run as Administrator
3. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and then press ENTER.
4. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and then press ENTER.

That's it
