WMP plays most AVI (xvid) files b&w?

I recently built a new computer with an Intel Core2Duo 6300 processor, and a Geforce 6600 video card. I am running windows XP SP2

Whenever I play an xvid file (using ffdshow) it plays in black and white... although not all files do this, most of the newest downloaded avi files do. Some color can be seen sporadically in some files, yet not in the right places, and most have a transparent greenish bar at the top. I have tried updating WMP to version 11, I have tried uninstalling all codecs and trying each the DivX, Xvid, and ffdshow separately, together, and nothing seems to work. Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be something to do with my video drivers? I've found a few posts about this type of issue recently on other forums, but no one has any constructive advice. Thanks!
