2 computers play it fine. One uses k-lite codec pack in WMP9. The other uses the actual DiVX codec (5.2) also played in WMP9.(uninstalled this & installed NIMO & it worked fine on this one too)

The 3rd (my laptop) won't play it in WMP9........UNLESS.......it's the DiVX codec, FROM DiVX

I've tried every codec pack under the sun & the only one that comes close is FFDshow. It'll play the 2nd half of the 30 second video. (The first half shows as jarbled technicolor square on the top 1/3 of the player).

I am totally confused on this. I even reinstalled WMP9, then tried every combination in WMP10, then restored back to WMP9 & reinstalled WMP9 again & it still doesn't work.

W/ any of the codec packs (besides FFDshow), WMP9 will open & *say* it's playing, but the progress slider goes nowhere & nothing shows on screen. TIA!!

I guess I should say a couple things, too about the video (in case it matters). I made it w/ Virtual Dub......(just saved & selected DiVX for compression type).

Also, it's saved as an AVI (thus Virtual Dub). I've always used this method 'cuz my Canon digicam makes large AVI's & they e-mail much easier shrunk to DiVX. Must've never sent e-mail with my laptop though 'cuz I'm just noticing this prob tonite!

What can I say... codecs are crazy. I've had my fair share of issues with them. (including today, though I resolved it) There may be a conflict. Either find it or wipe it. Or, did you consider rendering it with a different codec?

NOTE: I always keep multiple video players on my PC. Sometimes one will play it while another won't. (even if they both support the same codec the video was rendered with)

Thanks gang.

I just don't know if it's the codec or if it's actually this system 'cuz I've got 2 others that are playing the video just fine.

Plus, my main goal is (since, in this case it's a video of my 5yr old learning how to ride her 2-wheel bike) to be able to send this off to grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, etc. & I'd rather they able to simply view it on their WMP since it's windows default.

Since I know the DiVX codec works well, I suppose I *could* just tell 'em to use it & make sure they carefully install so they don't select *DiVX Pro Trial* and don't unwillingly install *Google toolbar*.

(grumble, grumble) Why hasn't freakin' WMP jumped on multi-format playback already. Need to fly up to Washington & kick the !%^ outta' Bill Gates!

For one, I don't recommend installing codec packs. Especially NIMO as I've hard awful things about it fubaring the system.

The ONLY "decoding" pack (in this sense that it contains no codecs/encoders, only decoders like ffdshow) is the satsuki pack, but I dunno if it's maintained anymore.

Try using the latest DIVX6 codec. That may help. Other than that, maybe the file got currupted when you tranferred it to the laptop?

Thanks, although the DiVX codec (5.2) works fine, I'd just rather not have to send the grandfolks, etc. thru the motions of d/ling that codec pack 'cuz you have to be careful you don't *accidentally* get the DiVX pro 6 month trial, or install the google toolbar. (I hate all those toolbars and even though I love Google, I hate that they created one). And if they want to continue using WMP, be sure they "untick" the DiVX 2.6 player during installation. (Heck of a lot to ask of grandfolks just tryin' to watch a freakin' video of their grandaughter)

Anyway, I guess I'll make a nice tutorial for the grandfolk to make sure they can't screw up the install & then they can watch these videos easily enough.

I still hate the fact that MS isn't utilizing the best compression codec to date. It sure as hell would make everybody's lives easier!

And DivX is? Who cares? If it encodes and plays fine, I and I imagine 99.99% of people could care less if it's open standard or not.

Sorry gang, after battling with it that night, I freakin' forgot about this thread.

So getting back to this..........heck, I'd be willing to try WMV. I didn't know that WMV could compress that well. (I'm assuming that WMV must be a MS-twisted MPEG??)

I'm assuming that a .wmv would make it a "lock" to work in everybody' WMP windows machine. (Obviously, I want *easy* for the grandparents)

Also..........what does "open standard" mean??? (forgive my ignorance)

TIA!

WMV9, Divx, Xvid, 3ivx, Nero Digital, RealVideo9, and a couple other more obscure codecs are all derivations off of the original mpeg4 standard. They all will give very similar quality and file size, with some obvious differences here and there.

Yes WMV is pretty much a sure thing with a machine that has Windows Media Player 9+.

"Open Standard" means open source... some people just want to see source code and be able to modify it if they so choose before they would use it. Don't ask me why.

OK, the "open source" thing was kinda' what I figured just after I posted.

I'll definitely give the WMV encoder a try. Sounds like the perfect ticket for sendin' the grandfolks big videos!!

One thing that I liked about DiVX (not knowing about WMV encoder) was that I could usually compress down to about 20% of a video's original size.....(give or take) And for e-mail.....(and especially grandfolks who think VHS is the shizznit).

You should do a comparison between the divx and wmv encoded videos at a specific bitrate (like 500kbps) and let us know how much better/worse one is. Compare file size / quality.

OK, will do!! (Probably won't get to it for a day or so, but as soon as I do, I'll post back here)
