I used to use 10 since it was the latest but since i just did a complete re-install i discovered that windows media player 9 actually seems better.... The way playlists were edited in 10 was bollocks and it would crash while loading a big file if i was doing somthing in the background such as closing a folder that the file came from, it was also slower and looked pretty much the same as 9. Anyone else think 10 is rubbish? Did i end up with a beta of it or somthing and not realise?!

10 includes the ability to encode MP3s without a costly 3rd party addon. Other than that, it's a wash imho. :)

I love the look and feel of WMP10, it makes WMP9 feel classic. That's the only part I notice.

I agree with you about WMP10 not being as good as WMP9. Windows Media Player 9 lets me reconcile my Gateway DMP-X20 mp3 player, but it doesn't reconcile properly in WMP10. Which sucks.

lameenc.dll encodes mp3's does it not? It aint costly its free :p

I guess some people just have had better luck with 10 :S It also wrecked a few playlists of mine and lost the location of the tunes in emm.

WP10 supports hardware acceleration for WMV HD, and better support for VMR9. I much prefer 10 over 9, WMP10 is almost a decent media player finally.

I mainly don't use Windows Media Player because its so crippled in functionality... it can't play dual audio AVIs, and it overrides some filter/plugin functions... And it uses more resources. You can't select your rendering method... etc. Use MPC, it's much better.

Ive always wondered why its crippled.... Its like being sold a dog with 1 leg that cant bark... sux. Why do i have to download or find these stupid codec things? Why cant they be included? Why dosent it play stuff that realplayer/quicktime can play? Why cant it just work with everything!

Not including codecs is not what I'd call crippled though. Remember, most codecs are made by people like you and me, especially the higher quality ones. These will never be packaged with Windows, and I'd rather not have them packaged with a media player (This is why I hate VLC) because then I can't decide for myself which codecs are the best and worth using. VLC just throws a bunch at you and "hopefully" they are high quality and good version... if not you'll need to overwrite them or remove them which can sometimes be a pain. I'd rather have only the codecs I need, so I don't get conflicts, and the ones I need I want to choose for myself for the best quality. In that respec, I think WMP and MPC did it right, don't include codecs, just give me the media player kthx. :)

For most people, VLC or codec packs can be good, because it removes the hassle.

For encoders like me, it's an absolute nightmare in some scenarios to have a hundred codecs that are all able to play your content... You need to take special care to ensure that both the right codec and right settings are applied in each specific application...

I only use the following codecs/filters anyways: H.264, XVID, OGG Vorbis Audio, OGM Splitter, Matroska Splitter, AAC Audio, HuffYUV, and I get my YV12 through Avisynth. :)
