Well, maybe I'm slow or losing my mind. But I thought .mkv clips were not natively supported in Windows Media Center (64-bit Win7). At least I remember reading some workarounds on the internet in the past.

The other day I learned WMC now plays .mkv? Since when did it happen? I do all Windows updates but don't pay much attention to the details, and was there such an update? I don't think I've installed anything special or done any tricks. I have various codecs installed including Matroksa Splitter but I had those in the past when WMC couldn't play .mkv files.

7MC has always had the ability to play MKVs. All you've ever needed was a 64bit splitter (Haali or MPC) and a 64bit decoder (built in MS, FFDShow, or MPC). To get them to show up in the default 7MC library, you may need a reg key added, I'm not sure on that one, I've used MediaBrowser since day one.
