Is there a way to watch programs recorded in Windows 7 MC over a network on a TV? It seems that the issue is the recording of the files as *.wtv files. I have read about converting to dvr-ms (right click on the file and convert) but you have to do that file by file or at least manually and then once done WMC does not recognize/organize the files.

It does not appear that any of the media players (WD TV+, PBO, etc.) can play *.wtv files natively.

Is the best option really to just get a DVR from the cable company and record shows with it for playback rather than trying to stream something from the computer to a TV?

After quite a bit of Googling, it sounds like the only real option to play WMC files natively is to have a HTPC or computer networked and connected to the TV that you can just pull the files up under your Homegroup by sharing the Recorded TV folder and then watch them that way.

Thanks, Bill

If you right click a wtv file and pick the option convert to dvr-ms the file should still be readable by WMC. If WMC is not playing dvr-ms it is because something took over that association. Right click the dvr-ms file and pick open with, and set WMC as the default.

To do it automatically you can use dvrmstoolbox.

You can use an Media Center extender to view recordings (and live TV) from 7MC. The XBox functions as a media extender and there are also some older MC extenders that are no longer made but are still available like the Linksys DMA 2100 and the HP MC Extender.
