Is there such a thing? A friend sent me a song in .wma format and when I try to transfer it to my Nomad Jukebox, it says it requires a license or something. Any way to get around this? Thanks.

From buymusic.com? :) It sounds like it has one of those DRM (?) copyright protection.

Does it play in winamp? You could try its WAV output plugin.

I think there are recorders out there that emulate a sound card and as long as you can play the file on your or your friend's computer, you can get a WAV out of it. IIRC, Advanced WAV/MP3 Recorder (or something similar) does this.

well... assumming that it's an issue of DRM (damn Microsoft!) you can try a program named (quite inelegantly, but I guess adequately) "Unf*ck"... it removes DRM from .wma files, so you can do whatever you want with them.

Before you try that, though... there's a free program called dbpowerAMP music converter (which I use extensively), that comes with a lot of available codecs, and I'm sure it can convert any file into anything else.

Failing these, you can always try to just play the file and simultanously record "What U Hear" from your soundcard into .wav. Not very elegant, but it will do the trick.

and by the way, .wma is evil... why don't people understand that it's not a good format is beyond my comprehension...

It is definately a DRM thing.

I ran into it as well. That is why I converted to Musicmatch Jukebox, after I recieved the suggestion. It does not solve your problem, because it does not "fix" your WMA files. But if your are interested, Find it here

But that is all I can add to this conversation, I have not tried the programs that AnitaPeterson suggested. Oh, and on the topic, the first program - Do you type the *? Or do you fill in the appropriate letter? :p

I have MP3 files I downloaded long ago from Napster that I (unfortunately) converted to WMA. I too have wondered how to convert them back to MP3. Is there a program to do it? Iwasn't quite following the DRM discussion, just want a way from WMA to MP3. Thanks!

I haven't found a way yet. I don't appreciate being strong-armed by Microsoft to use their format. No more WMAs for me.

Nice list, but not a single thing (that I saw) that can convert AAC files into anything else. I was surprised to see that Sound Forge 7 couldn't open a M4A/AAC file I'd ripped from a CD in Itunes 4.1. WTF?
