Witnessing an Accident

Man, I think I really screwed up-

Background: I'm 17, and have had my driver's liscence for a few months. Right now, my parents are out of town celebrating their anniversary in New York City. As such, I'm staying in my house during the day, then spending evenings at a friend's house. Last night, we (my friend's family and I) all went out to dinner, then I went back to take care of my dog, etc, then turned right around to go back to my friend's house. It was a little after midnight. Driving down my residential street, I see headlights of a truck, then they start bouncing, by this time I'm closer and realize it's because they're driving through people's front lawns, spinning around tearing up the grass (yes, I'm sure they were drunk). I slammed on the brakes and layed on the horn, and sure enough they peeled out of the lawn and missed me by an indescribably small amount. All this happened within a second or two. Right after the swerve and miss me, they peel around in a circle and slam into a parked truck.

Aftermath: I pull over and stop to make sure everyone's ok. They're trying to start their truck again, but it won't, thankfully, and they give up. I call out to them "are you guys alright?" They don't say anything, but they all get out of the car and are walking around. I noticed I was not the only witness-another guy was walking across the lawn toward the accident, talking on his cell phone. Here's where I screwed up: I knew I should stay until the police arrived, so I could give a witness account of what happened. I mean, they did a fair amount of damage to peoples' properties and they really nailed that truck. But, even though I wasn't involved in the accident I was really shaken up by coming so close to getting nailed on the driver's side, I was literally shaking. For some stupid-ass reason, I had the thought "ok, I'll go to [family I'm staying with]'s house and tell them what's up so they don't worry about why I'm not showing up. Then, I'll quickly head back to the scene." Yeah, I know, pretty obvious problem there, but it didn't occur to me for some weird reason until I was about 3/4 of the way to their house, when I'd calmed down a little. (Their house is like 5 mins from the scene). Once there, they (my friend and his parents) just confirmed that my deed was already done, I'd already left, so there was nothing I could do.

I feel pretty bad. :( I'm sure these guys will get what's coming to them anyway, seeing as their truck wouldn't start and there was another witness. But still, I just can't believe I was so stupid to just drive away and assume I could come back. At least I won't make that mistake again. It's like, in retrospect, yes the family would have been worried, they would have called my house and gotten no answer, would have sent their son (my friend) to come look for me and he would have found me and known what was going on. Problem solved, and they would understood why I stayed. Instead, I overlooked all that and just left. ARRRGH! Why did I do that!?

You can call the police and explain. If they need your statement, they will get it.... People do strange things in shock, it is hard to say how anyone would react. Don't worry about it.

if you call the police I can't see them getting too upset at you leaving the scene of an accident even though technically it's illegal. Worse case they will just dismiss your witness account, but I doubt they'd do anything against you considering your shock at the events. Alternatively just forget about it - most likely that other witness (who probably lives around there?) will tell the cops what happened, and since their vehicle doesn't drive anyway the cops will come and see what happened witness or no witness.

I wouldn't worry too much. Call the police. Tell them you saw what happened. Explain that you were shaken up. If they need anything from you, they will ask. No big deal. I believe it's only illegal to leave the scene of an accident if you were involved. There is no law that saws you have to stay and give assistance... unless it's a local thing.

Yes, gicve the police a call, but I'd recommend doing so anonymously, at least initially, to make sure you're not in any legal trouble, which I doubt.

You really think they would give him a hard time? I don't know of when the cops give people a hard time for telling the truth.

They probably wouldn't give hima hard time, especially given his circumstnaces and limited driving experience and such, but I would do it that way just to make sure first. If everything seems fine, then he can go to the PD without worrying about a ticket or something.
Really, it's not likely that there's a problem, but johnjohn320 :))) expressed concern about being in trouble and such.

Only if your Involved and leave the scene....then its Illegal. Or if someone dies and you withhold information about the accident.

He wasn't involved in the accident. As far as he and we know, no one died.
