Did this action violate any specific policy at your company or state rules that it operates under? Are there any other witnesses? What is holding you back from forcing the issue?

I'm sure the actiion violated some type of policy or state rule. I'm not well-read on this though. What's partly holding me back is that I know this is a very major situation that could potentially cause even more problems. This company is all about presenting a good image to the state (because the state funds them) so they could be shut down. This would mean a lot of people who I know are struggling to get by each month, might be out of a job.

on the other hand, imagine if this kind of thing leaked out to the press, and it turned out the organisation had done nothing to get rid of the guy - that would hurt the organisation even more

i agree with the others...i would add that one of the troubling things about the gun incident is that it must either be against the law or strictly regulated for non-law enforcement/military to carry guns around (never mind showing it off to minors).

aidan has a good point about the negative publicity....it can be just as bad, if not worse, to be found responsible for suppressing/denying information that was clearly known. That is part of the tragedy of some scandals such as the Enron and the Catholic priests'.

Updated as of 2/15. See OP... I'm giving it a couple more days and then I'm going to take action into my own hands if I have to.

Be sure to keep a log, make an entry about your meeting with management today and sign it. Believe me, it will hold more weight than anything they can bring up later.
Document anything and everything you can think of regarding both this person's behavior and your communication with management.

And be sure to use a BOUND book, like a calendar, so that pages cannot be added/removed, if it ever ends up in court. Also document thorughly your actions and managemnts responses, or your daily journal could indict you as well...
