*WITHOUT* looking at a dictionary, how would you define "besmirch?"

I used it in a sentence while I was drunk and I instantly wondered if I used the right word. First thing I did when I got home was to look it up. I said, "How *dare* you besmirch my character." Good vocabulary FTW. 😀
