I don't think a lot of people know his real name.

I wasn't sure. I think everyone probably knows his 'other name'... but I wanted to know if anyone knew his real name.

Don't ask me what brought this on, I was bored and did some googling.

I thought his first name was John.

I think its interchangable, like dick and richard.
I did a little poking around, and it looks like Joseph was his real first name, but John is most accepted, even though one person said there was no evidence that he was ever actually called John during his lifetime.

EDIT: Not that it matters. 🙂

oh i didn't know that.

anyway's ya i know, i won't give the answer though. he's a character in the one movie, and he was..deformed 🙁.

was he a real life person as well?
EDIT: ha, someone spoiled the answer

Okay, I'm intrigued, so I did more poking around and found this on a movie trivia site:
The ********'s name was Joseph, not John, Merrick. When Frederick Treves wrote his memoir, he referred to him as John. His handwritten manuscript reveals that Treves knew that Merrick's name was Joseph, and deliberately crossed out "Joseph" and replaced it with "John." Merrick's surviving correspondence shows he signed his name as Joseph, and contemporary newspaper articles about his case refer to him by his correct name. Why Treves changed his name to John is unclear.
Again, not that it matters.
